The night had stretched a little too long for Sara's taste. Since Sangah had slipped away to enact whatever nefarious plan she was sure would catapult her into wealth, she had sat alone at a table, not once bothered by anyone else in the club. Her glass was empty, to make it all worse. If the decision only fell to her, she would ditch this boring elite rendez-vous and saunter off to the nearest dive bar, if only to get a drink stronger than whatever she'd just had. But Shotaro, the very reason they'd come here, still hadn’t shown up. It seemed the night would last a while longer.

To make it pass faster, Sara needed something in her system — more alcohol, that was. She abandoned her empty glass on the corner of a table, craning her neck out to spot any waiter circling the room with a tray of drinks. When finally, one emerged from the crowd with difficulty, making sure not to spill any of the drinks he was holding, Sara jumped to her feet. She silently prayed those glasses weren't filled with the mildest of sparkling champagnes.

She'd barely even had the time to reach for a glass that two men entered her vision, wearing smiles that instantly put her on high alert. Their faces were red with booze, and she hoped the thick sheen of sweat on their skin had been caused by relentless dancing.

"Hey girl," was the introduction one of these two clearly drunk men opted for. "You alone?"

All things considered, Sara had much preferred being unbothered at her table, even if she had been alone. Though Sangah's plan had been to seduce rich men, she was less than willing to get anywhere near these drunkards.

"No, I'm with friends," she replied sharply, keeping her arms slightly in front of her, to prepare herself for any sudden move.

"Well, I don't see them here," the other said, not even bothering to pretend he'd looked around. "How about you come sit with us for a bit?"

Sara tried her hardest to contain a scoff, torn between the desire to deck one in the face, and the unwillingness to get herself kicked out. "Absolutely not. Get lost."

She should've seen it coming: these men were not in a state to listen to reason. When one stepped forward, his arms wide open, she took a larger step back. In the heat of the moment, she hadn't taken a second to look behind her. This was how her back bumped harshly into the sharp angle of an elbow, and Sara yelped out in both surprise and hurt.
