Brunch

Brunch. Something so simple, yet so inaccessible for any girls who had grown up at Beorim Orphanage. There, there was a strict routine to follow, no exceptions allowed. They would wake up at six on weekdays, at eight on weekends, and eat breakfast in the following half hour. There was no picking and choosing either — what was on the table, was all you could eat. Lunch would be at twelve sharp, and dinner at eight, leaving time for homework and showers, which were always quite the ordeal to schedule between all the girls.

Even before the orphanage, Vera had never had brunch in her life. It just wasn't something people of her rank did, as ridiculous as it sounded. Her mother was always so particular about the food she was allowed to eat, too. To this day, she could still hear her voice in her head, guiding her towards the appropriate options. The scrambled eggs she was currently eating would have made her pale.

This was a completely different life they'd stumbled into. Today, as they were supposed to check out of the hotel and take the first plane home, the girls had been invited to one last brunch with their hosts. There would surely be snacks and food on the plane, as first class always guaranteed, but Shotaro had insisted again and again they have this last moment together. Of course, Yuhwa had relented. Vera had the feeling she was not very good at going against someone like him.

After this meal, it would all be over. That was all she was able to focus on, as conversations flew by her around the table. In a couple of hours, she would be back home, if she could even call it that. The eyes on her would be gone — that much was a relief. But the comfort would be too. That was less fun.

"Yeah, Wonjun just keeps bothering me about his choir singers," she barely heard Wonbin say, at the other end of the table. "The people I meet for work don't tend to be in that register."

"Not to mention, singers tend to be real divas, yeah?" Seunghan joked, his mouth full. "I mean, you're a prime example."

From the corner of her eye, Vera saw Wonbin discreetly flip Seunghan off, but she didn't pay it any mind. As much as she wanted to fit in, it never seemed like the right time to slip into a conversation. And now, it was too late for that.
