Beorim Orphanage had always been a decent place to live, but no one had ever ventured to call it fun. Seulbi and Vera had asked time and time again to implement karaoke nights into their weekly routine, but the answer had never been positive. The justification was never the same, though: one time, it would be because it would push their bedtime too late, others, it would be because the matron had terrible headaches and could not deal with an entire night of children singing. In the end, the two girls, and all of their willing friends, had resigned themselves to singing together while walking to school, which wasn't nearly as fun.
Yuhwa, although she'd never wanted to participate in any karaoke, had lamented the many refusals anyway. Not for herself, but for her younger friends, who seemed to enjoy singing and dancing so much. From time to time, she'd walk in the hallways of the orphanage and hear a glimpse of Vera singing to herself, or Seulbi humming along to SHINee songs, and it would bring a smile to her face.
This was why, tonight, Yuhwa was happy to be at this karaoke lounge, eager to see her friends finally let their voice out. At least, that had been the plan. She hadn't expected Seunghan, of all people, to hog the microphone nearly all night long, singing his heart out like he'd filled up a stadium. He'd at least allowed Sohee to join him for a duet, but it still left the others to the side, their only activity drinking and eating as they listened to his improvised concert.
Although everyone had long tuned him out, one person remained captivated. Shotaro had clapped along and waved his hands to every song, as Seunghan's first fan for his reconversion into singing. Yuhwa glanced at him from the corner of her eye, and he chuckled.
"He's still going, huh?" he said, trying to speak louder than Seunghan was singing. "I guess that's as good a way as any to relieve stress. What about you, Yuhwa? Wanna sing?"
Her eyes widened. "Oh, uh, no, thank you."
And of course, he pulled out his usual pout. "Why not? It would be fun. And I'm sure you can sing well."
Shotaro always made it hard to resist him, armed with the same tactics Seulbi employed against her, but this was one request Yuhwa could not capitulate to. As much as she enjoyed music, her love stopped at listening. Even when she hummed along, she preferred to do it where no one could hear. This was a step too far.
