Theo's hearing went silent as soon as she heard Melissa point out her unwise mistake. Theo lied about her vision. She could see the group visibly erupt into outrage, namely Shauna, which was no surprise. Theo simply kept her hands clasped between her knees, uneven nails pressing into her skin as she stared at the ground, only able to see them through her peripherals.
She could see Alex and Mari's shared confusion, having missed the revelation that Theo shared with the rest of the group, being that Coach Scott was dead. Perhaps, if they could've waited to talk, Theo's lie wouldn't have been unraveled. Figured that the one time she lied about a vision, it would instantly get caught. Around her, the others explained to Mari and Alex what Melissa was talking about; Theo raised her frozen gaze an inch to see their faces—more Alex than Mari, watching as it fell when Taissa stated that Theo had told them that she saw Coach Scott die.
Alex's eyes instantly found Theo after that. The aggravated and betrayed muttering of the other girls were still muted, muffled in Theo's ears, like they were underwater; without a word though, Theo was still able to understand the look Alex was giving her. The way the corners of her mouth turned downward, her eyes softened with not disappointment, or pity, but maybe an apology.
As if to say, I'm sorry, but you know what we'll have to do now.
Lottie stepped forward then, and though her words went unheard by Theo, she tried to defend her nonetheless. The informally named prophet frowned at the group's reaction, insisting that Theo did really see something; she could see it in her face, regardless of if it was actually the untimely death of Coach Scott or not, Theo had seen something, which was a good thing to Lottie.
The Wilderness could've been misinterpreted, Theo hadn't had a vision for a while, so there was a chance that she just misunderstood what It was trying to show her. That was Lottie's defense to the rest of the group, who, maybe with a bit more convincing and in any other situation, would've agreed with her and simmered down. However, the situation was already high strung, and Shauna was determined to see through the consequences of all parties involved, if for no reason more than to release some of her anger into the process.
It was Shauna's voice that broke Theo's silence, both the one she was hearing and her lack of defending herself— or owning up to her lie. As the Shipman girl stood towering over her, glowering down at her in an almost inhuman way, she snapped, " Tell us where they're hiding, now. "
Theo continued to avoid looking up at Shauna, but not out of fear. She tried to subdue the chuckle of ridicule that slipped from her mouth, a small sound of amusement by the foolishness of the idea that she knew where they were at that very moment. Finally, Theo raised her head to meet Shauna's burning glare, tilting it to the side as she replied flatly, " I don't know where they are. "
" Then maybe you should have another vision and figure it out for us. " Melissa interjected again, taking a step closer to them, but she was still just hovering behind Shauna.
