Sam found it incredibly ironic that she would be the untimely doom of not one, but both of their coaches. Sure, Coach Martinez was a pure accident, a tragedy that she really couldn't have changed, but she felt like she was Coach Scott's omen when sitting next to him underneath the tree. Why she had agreed to go with him, she wasn't all that sure, maybe she felt obligated to—no, Sam rarely felt obligation—so then perhaps it was because she wasn't present for the hunt and therefore would've been an easy target for the next if she stayed.
She didn't really think it was her morals that kept her by Coach Scott's side, but she couldn't just leave him to die, as he inevitably would in his condition. He had one leg, and was already starving as it was, he wouldn't have made it a week away from the cabin alone. Fortunately for her, the Yellowjackets' so-called 'new leader' had found a way to communicate with her behind the others' backs in a weak attempt to keep them alive and out of the wrath of the group.
