Week 6
After school, I walked home with Kokona, after asking if Osorō and Aru could follow for safety reasons. At that, she became concerned, but I told her I would explain everything once we got to her place.
Once we did, Kokona informed them that her younger brother had an Xbox One the boys could play in the living room, and they hurried for it, making me chuckle. The two of us girls went into Kokona's room.
"Alright, tell me everything," Kokona practically demanded, as we sat down on two comfy beanbag chairs she had set up on the floor.
I inhaled, then said, "I've always liked Osorō, not Aso."
"I knew it!"
"Hold on, let me finish!" I exclaimed, and she quickly shut her mouth. "I couldn't like him, though. He's not someone my father would approve of... so I told you I liked Aso. I pretended to like Aso because it was easier."
She sighed. "I can understand that..."
"But it's more than just Osorō not meeting my father's standards," I said, grabbing her hands so she knew I was being serious. "This doesn't leave this room, understand me?"
When she nodded, I inhaled again. I'd never directly told anyone about my father's abuse, but... "My father... is physically and verbally abusive. Do you remember how I was sick last week?" I made air quotes around the word "sick," and Kokona gasped when I admitted the truth — and again when I asked my question. "I actually... was beat by my father."
I lifted my shirt to show her the still-healing bruise I'd received from that day, when he kicked my stomach. She gently reached out to touch it, hesitating until I nodded.
"Oh, Athena..." Kokona started to cry. "I'm so sorry. I had no idea."
I let her hug me as I continued, "Osorō and Aru both know the truth. Aru because he lives with me, and Osorō... the reason I like him so much is because he found out on his own and stood up for me in his own way, without endangering me. He's... like a ray of sunshine in a world of darkness, for me."
She pulled away and wiped her tears. "Aww, that's so sweet."
I smiled. "Yeah, he is, actually. He's like my secret softie." I chuckled.
"Oh, so that's who the contact name belongs to? I've seen his name pop up on your phone when we hang out, and during drama club," Kokona said, and I laughed.
"Yep," I said, "the delinquent leader's name in my phone is Secret Softie. Don't tell him I told you that."
She giggled. "I won't." Then, she hugged me again. "Thank you for trusting me enough to tell me. I'm sorry you had to suffer in silence."
"It's okay," I said, hugging her back. "I had Aru. And Osorō."
"I'm glad you weren't entirely alone in this."
"Me too, Kokona." I inhaled. "But... there's more." She listened patiently, albeit anxiously, as I continued, "The reason Aru and Osorō were following me around today... is because I've been receiving some very concerning notes in my locker."
