You have been alongside Jenna for a month. Taking her to the courthouse, grocery shopping, her therapist appointments or simply just going to the park for fresh air. Some days you’ll alternate with the other officers, but even with them Jenna wanted you to be close by.
You have been itching to go for a jog for quite some time. As a police officer it is crucial to keep up your fitness. Not only for your health, but to do your job correctly. You didn’t want to risk it at first, but knowing that Jenna is calmer now, you took the opportunity to get some time for yourself.
You got ready early morning; the sun still rising and informed the men outside patrolling that you’d be out for an hour at most.
Feeling the cool morning breeze hitting your face and heart beating faster from the movement, the sweat dripping down your face - you feel lighter. You missed this. Once you reach 5km, you decide to return to the safe house.
Before making the run back, you take a moment to drink some cold and refreshing water. Your body tenses slightly. It feels as if eyes are on you. Your eyes quickly scan your surroundings. There are people driving and walking all around you, but none is paying attention to you.
Your eye falls on a man talking on the phone on the same pavement as you as distance away. Your instinct tells you to not stand there any longer but to move. Your face stoic, you do not show panic or indicate you are aware of their presence.
With no time to waste you start running in another direction back to the safe house. One thing you were taught in your training, don’t lead them directly to their target. You occasionally look behind to find that man is following you and faster this time.
You run towards a small shopping mall close by. The more people around the better. You stop running once you reach the entrance and walk towards the nearest bathroom. You nearly walk into another female shopper in the hallway before apologizing and open the door to the ladies.
You find a stall and lock the door behind you. Because you have been here before with Jenna you know that the windows had no burglar bars on them. You closed the lid of the toilet and climb onto it like a step to reach the open window. After you carefully managed to climb out through it, you jumped down landing on your feet. Feeling the impact zing through your legs. With one quick check if the coast is clear, you start running again back to the safe house.
“Damian.” You call breathless while entering the garden. “I must inform you of something. I think-”
“Y/n! Where were you?” Jenna’s concerned voice interrupts your conversation. She’s standing in the doorway in her pyjamas.
You look to your colleague. Did he not inform her of your whereabouts?
You walk towards the door, your colleague close behind.
“I told her, but she didn’t believe me.” He explains.
Jenna quickly grabs your hand once you’re in the house. “Don’t go, don’t go. Promise me.” You instantly go tense,
“Jenna. Hold on.” You say softly trying to move your hand out of hers. You feel your heart beating faster. Damian is right behind you.
“Is everything okay?”
“It’s okay officer.” You say trying to contain your nervousness with a more controlled voice. “I got it from here. Thank you. We will talk soon.”
Once Damian is out of earshot you feel your jaw clench as you close the door. Once you turn around, your eyes meet Jenna’s guilty ones.
“Y/n, please don’t scold me.” She pouts, eyes shining.
You take a breath. “Jenna at the end of the day I am on duty. Your officer. If you do the wrong thing, I could get into serious trouble okay.”
You unzip and remove your sweaty jacket and throw it onto the couch. “The officer told you where I was. If I leave it will only be brief okay. Listen to them.” You say. “They are here to protect you as well. Please Jenna. Don’t make this difficult for yourself. Don’t make it difficult for me.”
You need to inform Damian of what occurred earlier. You must focus on Jenna’s safety. Not worry about what your colleague just saw. These guys are dangerous and to think they’re so close to the location.
Jenna continues to stand there, not meeting your eyes. It’s like you’re talking to a little kid. You sigh when you get no response. “I’m going to shower.” You start walking, but before you know it, you feel two arms wrapped around your torso. You tense at the sudden contact.
“I was scared.” Jenna whispers resting her head om your shoulder. “I thought they got you too.”
You try to pull her arms apart, but her grip is tight. “Jenna let go. Jenna please.”
Your heart squeezes at her concern and fear. “You can trust me okay.” You whisper, patting her hand. “But you should not show them that you’re close to me. You have to still hold some professionalism. You understand?”
“I understand.” Jenna slowly lets you go, and you turn to meet her pleading eyes. “I’m not allowed to speak or see my family. I’m alone. But when you’re with me – I feel like I can handle it all. Our bond is the closes thing to feeling normal.”
You can’t argue with that because to you it’s the closes thing to having a normal and warm heart.

After your shower, you explained to Damian and the others that you think one of the gang leader’s men were sent to find Jenna. You are concerned at how close he is to the safe house. A plan will have to be made to continue protecting the witness.
The next day, your colleague and friend Xavier came to do a routine check up at the safe house.
“Xavier. Nice to see you.” You greet him in the garden handing him a cup of hot coffee. “Traffic alright?”
“Yeah.” He nods with a smile. “And thank you.”
“So, you want to know the well-being of the witness?” you ask.
He takes a sip. “Actually, I’m here to bring you this.” He hands you a big brown envelope. “Your new assignment.”
“What?” You take the envelope, eyes creased. “New assignment? I’m in an assignment.”
“Not anymore.” He informs. “The captain has sent me to come fetch you. Inside the folder are all the documents you will need.”
You shake your head in disbelief. “I don’t understand.”
“You’ve become too close to the witness.”
A cold runs through your veins. No. Damian…
“This is dangerous not only to her but you too. Do you really think it’s beneficial for you to be here? Especially after what occurred yesterday.”
“But I’m protecting her. She wouldn’t want anyone else.” You try to stand your ground.
“You can make this easy or difficult for yourself but all I’m saying is that I’m not alone. The captain has sent more men to fetch you if necessary.”
You cannot believe this. Your hands are tied. “When do I have to leave?”
“Tomorrow evening.”
