After a few weeks, Jenna was invited to one of her father's famous balls. She normally opts out, but apparently this year she was just in the mood. Since you are her bodyguard, it was necessary that you tag along.

"Giselle?" You look at your outfit in the mirror. "I thought I was going as her bodyguard. Is this really necessary?" You ask turning to her.
She gives you a mischievous smile."Why are you asking me?"
"I mean, you picked it." You look at the mirror again, catching her eye in the reflection. "Didn't you?"
You here a knock on the door and it opens. "Are you ready?" You hear Jenna's voice. "You're taking forever."
"Wow." Jenna gives you a once over. You feel a little self conscious. "You clean up nice."

You look at her outfit. She looks relaxed and confident. "Not too bad yourself, Ortega."
"I'll meet you at the garage." She says, putting on her shades.
"What car you taking today?" You stop her.
"The mundane one."
You frown. "Which ones that?"
"The one you picked last."
Giselle laughs.
You clean your teeth. "You little-"
*
"I'd like you to meet my father later tonight." Jenna takes a sip of her drink.
"You gonna show him your new bodyguard? Do you need daddy's approval?" You tease.
Jenna rolls her eyes. "You sure are talking a lot." She places her drink on a bar table. "Let's see if you can apply this confidence to the dancefloor."
Your heart begins to beat faster. "The what?"
"Let's go." She says with a straight face. "I'm in the mood for a twirl."
"Jenna. No." You shake your head.
Jenna doesn't take no for an answer and takes your hand and leads you to the floor.
"Hey, c'mon." Jenna rests her hand on your shoulder. She holds her hand up for you place yours in it. She looks at you, her eyes softening. "Nobody's here. Just you and me."
You hesitantly put your hand in hers and you hold her above her waist. You feel some sort of confidence return to you, yet blatantly aware you can't dance.
You smirk. "Watch your toes, Ortega."
*
You and Jenna go mingle amongst the people. This is the most she's ever smiled, you thought.
She decides to bring you outside to the pool area. The glow of the pool lights underneath the water is calming.
"Is it just my imagination, but are we becoming civil with each other?" You smirk, taking a sip of your drink.
"I don't know," Jenna shrugs. "I'd say little more than civil."
Jenna takes a sip of her drink and turns to you. Her eyes look expectant or unsure.
"Y/n, if you had a choice...." She says. "To go back and no longer have to be my bodyguard, but you could still be close to me. Would you take it or leave and not look back?"
You give a nervous laugh. "Jenna, you're part of the mafia. I left that kinda life a long time ago...I-"
"If I didn't come from a dangerous family." Jenna interrupts. "I was just Jenna, a student in college." She gives you soft smile. "Who loves animals, enjoys long drives, who might have some anger issues. Enjoys reading..."
"I-I don't know..." You look at Jenna, but then look back to the pool. "But it's just an imagination anyway."
"Sorry," Jenna gulps her drink. "Just ignore what I said. Let's blame it on the drink."
You give an uneasy laugh. "Yeah." You take a big sip as well.
*
Giselle walks towards you. "Y/n, someone delivered a letter earlier today. It slipped my mind. I meant to give it to you."
You take the letter from her and open it eagerly.
You read its contents.
"Jenna," you say in shock. "Dane needs my help. He's not well."
Jenna looks at you, emotionless.
"He's got a family, a child. He's like my brother, I don't want him to go through this alone." You explain, nearly pleading.
Jenna looks towards the crowd on the dancefloor."You said he means a lot to you. You even came all this way to my house, willing to be tortured and imprisoned on his behalf."
"It's crazy, I know."
"I heard one does crazy things for those you care about the most." Jenna meets your eyes, there's something you can't put your finger on. "Go to him."
You shake your head. You must've heard wrong."What?"
"You no longer have to stay. You're free to leave y/n." Jenna says.
"I can go?" You ask, surprised and elated.
Jenna takes out the car keys out of her blazer pocket. She hands it to you. "Here, it's yours."
Your eyes widen. "Jenna, you're joking right? I can't."
"You picked it remember..." Jenna gives you a small smile. "It's yours. Y/n just take it please."
You take the keys from her. They feel heavy, but not in weight. "Jenna I don't know what to say..."
Jenna covers her warm hand with yours and her eyes doesn't leave yours.
"Promise me you'll take care of it. Something you can look at and... Remember me. Not Miss Ortega, but Jenna." She smiles genuinely, with a hint of sadness.
This is final. This is goodbye.
"Thank you." You whisper and she releases your hand, feeling a heaviness in your chest.
You give her a grateful smile and nod towards Giselle. You then make your way hastily to the door.
