"Finally. Why have you been ignoring me for days? Why did you leave my house without saying goodbye?" Jenna says the moment you answer her call. "If I upset you in anyway, you'd tell me right?"

"I wasn't feeling well, so I went back home." You say. "I just haven't been in the mood to talk to anyone."

"Bullshit y/n. What's really wrong?" You hear the hint of frustration in her voice. "We're friends, we're supposed to share things with each other."

You take a deep breath. This could backfire badly...

You close your laptop half way, your assignment would have to wait.

"That day...Anne came over to your house. She told me, that for the sake of your career... I should walk out of your life." You explain, terrified.

There's a pause.

"Y/n, she said that?" Jenna asks.
Another pause.

"I'm sorry." Jenna apologizes. "I'm sorry, I wasn't there when this happened."

"This isn't your fault." You say.

"I knew some people didn't completely approve that I prefer non-famous friends, but this, this isn't necessary."

You don't know what to say. Your stomach is in a knot.

"I'll figure it out. Okay?" Jenna speaks up after some silence.

"Okay." You say, surely not convincing enough.

The next day, your stomach dropped at the news on social media. Jenna would not be doing scream 7 due to unforeseen circumstances.

You knew that this was a project she's been looking forward to, since 6 was such a hit. She enjoyed the franchise and suddenly she wasn't going to be a part of it anymore.

The text she sent you hours later confirmed it.

They pulled me from the movie.

Breathing became a little difficult to do.

This was your fault. Instead of staying out of her life as they asked, you came back in and now you regret the consequences of your actions.

This is not what you wanted and if you continued down this road, it won't get any better.

You haven't heard from Jenna the whole day nor the next. You thought she must've realised that it wasn't worth it.

That if she held on to you, her career would end in a blink of an eye. She realised maybe, you were not worth the sacrifice and you wouldn't blame her. You just cost her a big movie.

*

You took the time to think things through and felt it was best to do the difficult, but right thing.

Jenna apologized for being a little quiet, but she said she needed time to think and sort things out.

She sent you a text to come over to her house and that was the perfect time for you to do what you planned.

*
Jenna opened the door and allowed you in.

"It's good to see you." Jenna smiles walking to the kitchen. "You want some tea? I just boiled the kettle."

"No thank you, Jenna. I just came over to-"

"I'm sorry I was so quiet. It was just a lot all at once, you know." She runs a hand through her hair.

"I know, that's why I came over to give you this."

The memory of a year ago plays freshly in your mind:

I don't trust a lot of people. I don't let anyone in too easily. But you, you're a little different. You know I travel a lot and my house stands empty most times, but even when I'm here... I want you to just walk in. This is your home too.

The same spare house keys Jenna gave you, you now take out of your pocket and drop it quietly onto her kitchen table.

"Why are you giving me those?" Jenna eyes stay on the set of keys.

"I won't need it anymore." You say finding the strength to say what you played out in your mind. "I won't be visiting you anymore and I'd appreciate it if you don't visit me."

"What? Y/n..." Jenna stands but you're already walking away.

You're nearly at the front door, until you feel Jenna's firm grip on your arm.

"You're not leaving." Jenna says half in shock.

"Let me go." You say quietly, still looking at the door.

"No, y/n. You're not going anywhere. You're not leaving." She loosens her grip on your arm.

You turn to meet Jenna's eyes. The emotion behind them too much to bare that you're forced to look away.

"Jenna we have no choice." You whisper, you've lost the power in your voice. Your chest hurts.

"Y/n." You can hear her plead. "How is this fair?"

You feel the tears threatening to fall. It stings your eyes. It is unfair.

"Y-you're the one person to bring me the happiness I've been in search for all my life." Jenna explains. "Your friendship saves me y/n, but what you're about to do... is gonna be the death of me."

"Jenna please." The tears finally fall. You don't want her to make this any more difficult than it already is.

"Y/n please. Stay." Jenna's voice small. Like a sad child pleading. She tries to embrace you, to keep you from leaving.

"Jenna!" You cry. "You're going to lose your job. You already lost one project. I don't want you to regret your decision later on because of me."

You sniff, trying to get her off you. "You worked hard to be where you are. Please. I'm not giving you a choice here. I'm leaving."

"No!" Jenna releases you, but she still freezes you with her intense stare. "You don't have the right to make decisions for me, just like the other people in my life. I am my own person. I have a say. What I say, goes. To hell with any other options!" Jenna shouts.

"Jenna, just let me go." You beg, your throat burning.

"I won't!" Jenna cries. Tears streaming down her face. "I'm not losing you. We promised we would stick together no matter what."

"I'm sorry." You sniff. "But we can't win, you know that."

Jenna looks at you, searching for something in your eyes. A change of heart. For you to take back the words you just uttered. But it's the truth.

"This hurts. It hurts so bad to hear you say that." She tries to wipe away her tears.

"It hurts me too Jenna. It hurts me even more. But our friendship has to end here."

You reach for the door and open it. You can feel Jenna looking at you, but you're too scared to meet her teary eyes again.

"Goodbye, Jenna."
