You look down at the address on your phone one last time to confirm the number on the apartment door. You take a deep breath and knock firmly. Your heart beating faster against your chest and palms a little damp.
You're amused at yourself. This is ridiculous.
The door opens and your breath nearly stops as her familiar sweet face turns to shock and then her dark eyes narrow down on you.
"You." Jenna looks at you with disgust.
"Jenna." You greet. "It's good to see you."
The door is slammed straight into your face. The cold air hitting you like a slap. You didn't see it coming but you could've expected it.
"Wait, Jenna." You knock on the door again. "Please can we talk?"
"Get away from my door!" Jenna shouts from behind.
"Don't be like that." You plead.
The door swings open again, and two hands shove you away. You stumble at the impact, eyes wide but gain your balance again.
"What don't you understand of getting away from my door?" Jenna yells. "For a police officer it seems you can't follow orders. You deserve far more than just a mere shove."
"I do." You admit.
"Oh at least we can agree on that." She laughs bitterly. "You dare show your face here? After what you did?"
"Jenna I-"
"I don't need your services anymore, officer." Jenna interjects. "You can go." She turns back and bangs the door with you still standing there.
You take a deep breath. That was intense. Well at least she spoke to you, you thought. That's a start.
You knew this would be a possible reaction, so you came prepared. You take out the paper with a coffee shop and time on it from your jacket pocket. Already folded, you throw it in her post-box against the wall.
The ball is now in her court.
*
The next day, you sat down at the said coffee shop and waited for Jenna. You waited for quite some time, and the moment you wanted to leave she walked into the door.
She really looked better than when you last saw her. No stress or worry about her life in jeopardy. But she matured.
The two of you sat in silence for a few minutes after the friendly waiter brought Jenna's beverage order.
"It's been more than a year. Why are you back?" Jenna asks coldly, holding her cup of coffee with both hands.
"I have completed my assignment." You explain trying to find some sort of softness in her eyes. "I asked to be stationed back here again. I don't want to be away from home too long."
"Then why do you need to see me?" Jenna retorted.
"I missed you." You admit softly.
"No Y/n." Jenna shakes her head. "No. You don't just come back here and disrupt the peace I made long after you left." She seethes. "You don't come here as if it didn't affect me. Did you even think about me?"
The question freezes you in place. I shouldn't have... But you're unforgettable, you want to say. You allow the silence to fill the gap.
You clear your throat. "But you've been living a somewhat normal life after the arrest and passing of the perpetrators. You must be happy?"
"Oh I am." Jenna smiles boastful. "Thanks to Emma. So don't worry, I don't need your help or protection."
The name piques your interest. Your brows crease as it is unfamiliar to you.
"I'm not here for that. I came back to see if we can reconcile what we had." You say.
She scoffs with a mocking smile. "You want to reconcile?" She comes closer to you. "Did any of it mean something to you?"
"It did." You respond. "I just thought it was best to get you to detach from me instead of just waiting for me. Anything could've happened on the field, Jenna."
Jenna nods her head, clenching her jaw. "You thought it was best for me. You chose for me." Her eyes are burning holes through yours. Her walls are solid, they won't break just yet. "If you want to come back in my life, you are going to have to work damn hard for it y/n."
The more you listened and watched Jenna, the more you realised it wasn't anger, it was disappointment and pure hurt. That's the worst feeling. You broke her trust and left her to deal with the after-effects.
If that is what it takes to have her back in your life, you'll do anything. "I never hid away from hard work."
"But you hid your care from me when I needed it most." Jenna retorts grabbing her purse and standing up from her chair. "You're going to have to prove it to me this time."
