You never said a word to Jenna once Xavier left the house. Instead, you helped her prepare dinner. Pretending that everything is fine was your specialty thanks to your job, but doing it with her around eats at you.

The next day, you woke up nice and early to take her out for breakfast at a little café she grew to love while staying at the safe house. You played mini golf at the park and had a bike ride along the seaside. Something she’s been wanting to do for a while now.

“What movie do you want to watch?” you ask sitting on the couch and channel surfing.

“Pitch perfect.” Jenna says eagerly.
“Really?” you ask.

Jenna walks over with a bowl of warm popcorn and hands it to you. “Yes. Don’t argue.” She sits down next to you and once she’s comfortable, you throw a blanket over her legs.

The movie plays, but your mind is preoccupied.

“You all are making a mistake. I’m the best person for this job.” You explain. A fire building up within you. It is taking everything in you to keep it at bay. “Jenna will only be comfortable with me. She only trusts me.”

“Not anymore.” Xavier stares into his coffee.

Your brows crease and heart starts to race. “What do you mean?”

“The captain wants no loose ends. We will convince her that this was simply just part of your job. It was never personal – only duty.”

“You want me to lie?” your eyes widen. “To break the very fragile trust left she has in people?”

“Whatever is necessary for her not to look for you once you’re gone.” Xavier turns to you, eyes stone cold. “To obey any officer watching over her, not just you. This is for her safety. Lying is part of this job."

You feel the fire within you die slowly. You cannot handle the weight of being responsible for breaking Jenna’s trust. “Xavier…” Have mercy.

The slow realisation turned your stomach into a knot. If something happened to you while on your new assignment… if you never make it back... It would kill you if you still leave her with hope of your return. Your job was more serious than she could ever imagine. Anything could happen while on the field. This iwas the best option.

“You will do your part as commanded.” Xavier says. “Get packing, I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Before you know it, Jenna is asleep on your shoulder. You had to turn on a second movie to get her to finally do so.

You gently and slowly manoeuvre out from under her head and carefully guide her to continue sleeping on the couch. You watch her, so peaceful. It hurts knowing that in a few hours she will wake up and you won’t be there anymore.

You quickly fetch your bags from your room. Xavier is already waiting outside for you. Knowing that she’s asleep must this slightly easier for you.

You walk through the front gate until her voice freezes you in place. You couldn’t resist not looking at her.

“Y/n! Where are you going?” Jenna shouts walking out the front door. “Y/n!”

“Miss Ortega.” Damian blocks her with an arm. “Remain in the house.”

Jenna turns to him, eyes lethal. “I am not going anywhere till she answers me. Y/n!”

Every sound of your name is like daggers being pushed into your heart. It’s getting difficult to breathe.

Xavier walks to stand in front of you, blocking Jenna’s view. “Officer y/l/n has been reassigned per her request.”

“What? No, it can’t be.” You hear the disbelief in her voice. “Y/n? No, she wouldn’t.”

Xavier gestures with his index finger for another safe house officer to close in on Jenna, holding her back. Once pleased, he heads towards the car with another female officer. You follow suit.

“Get off of me!” Jenna shouts. “Get off of me! Y/n, talk to me please!” her desperate cries squeezing your heart. You feel sick.

“Officer. Get in the car.” The female policewoman instructs. “We need to go.”

“You’re my protector! My friend!” Jenna sobs, falling onto her knees on the concrete. “Don’t leave me!”

You close your eyes at the haunting sight. “I’m sorry Jenna.” You say, voice barely audible. Your throat burning. “Take care of yourself.”

“Y/n. Come back here! No.” Jenna cries, hurt evident in her features. How long would it take her to smile again…

With the strength you have left, you walk over to the car and nearly throw yourself into it, closing the door while Xavier climbs in. Wasting no time, he puts the key into the ignition and locks the door.

“Y/n! Please!” you hear Jenna cry outside.

Your heart is racing. Your head pounding. This moment will forever be ingrained in your memory. You are betraying someone who managed to feel like a friend to you too.

“Just drive. Drive. Drive the damn car Xavier!” you shout.

“Take good care of her.” You say. “She’s been through a lot.”

“With our lives, y/n.”
