Jay hadn't meant to let it get this bad.

The throb in his arm had started as a dull ache—something he could grit his teeth through and brush off with a smile. But now, under the silence of the monastery night, that ache had become something sharp, something hot, something that stole the breath from his lungs every time he so much as shifted.

And he was still trying not to cry.

"Don't be a baby," he whispered to himself. "You've been through worse. You got zapped by your own lightning once. You survived—kind of. This is nothing. This is fine."

He bit down on the skin of his forearm again to muffle the next wave of pain. It didn't help. In fact, it hurt more, and his eyes started to sting.

That's when the door creaked open.

Jay panicked, jerking to sit up and yanking his blanket over his arm—but the motion made him cry out in pain, just loud enough for whoever it was to hear.

"...Jay?"

It was Kai.

Of course it was Kai.

Jay scrambled to wipe his eyes. "I'm fine! Nothing! Go away!"

Kai blinked at him from the doorway. His arms were crossed, his hair slightly messy from sleep. He stepped into the room anyway. "Yeah. You sound fine. That yell didn't sound like you just stubbed your toe."

Jay hugged his injured arm, turning his head. "I said go away."

Kai closed the door behind him and walked over to the bed without a word. Jay didn't look up, but he could feel the heat of his brother-in-law's presence. Literally. Kai always radiated heat, even when he wasn't trying.

"...Let me see it."

"What?"

"Your arm."

"No."

"Jay."

"I said—"

Before Jay could finish, Kai sat on the edge of the bed and gently reached for his arm. Jay tried to pull away, but Kai's grip wasn't rough—it was careful. Steady. Warm.

"...Dude," Kai said softly, eyes narrowing as he finally saw the swollen, bruised, obviously broken limb. "You've been walking around like this for how long?"

Jay didn't answer.

Kai sighed and sat back. "You're such a moron."

Jay flinched.
