Jay, you let the villains escape again!
Jay, you're useless! I don't know why I ever let you and my sister get together!
Jay, because of you, the criminal escaped. Again.
Jay, I don't know what my uncle saw in you. You're useless.
Jay, when I picked you to the blue ninja that day I did not think you would be this clumsy. Go to your room and ponder on what insignificant loss you caused.
That's why Jay was in his room right now, crying. It was like a ton of bricks fell on her shoulder. He hates it.
He would have called Mia, but she was in Brazil, rainforest.
So she wasn't available.
" What's wrong?"
"What are you doing here?" Jay asked sharply.
" I just wanted to see if you were okay."
Jay scoffed. " Well, I am, so you can go now."
Kai didn't go, though. Instead, he leaned in the doorway.
" Listen, Jay. We were all angry back there, and we didn't know what to say. I'm sorry if I made you feel bad."
Jay looked away as tears pricked his eyes. " But it always happens."
" What always happens?"
" The fact that I mess the mission up. Always."
Now a tear escaped her eye, and she tried to hide it. Kai, though, saw it
" Oh, Jay." He whispered, walking over to his brother and enveloping him into a hug.
Jay didn't resist. He threw his arms around his older brother and buried his face into his shoulder.
Kai held Jay tightly, feeling the way his little brother trembled against him. He let out a slow breath, his anger from earlier completely gone, replaced with guilt. He’d been harsh. Too harsh.
And now, his poor brother in law was breaking apart in his arms.
"You don’t always mess up, Jay," Kai murmured, rubbing soothing circles on his back. "You just... think you do because you’re hardest on yourself."
Jay let out a wet laugh, muffled against Kai’s shoulder. "That’s rich, coming from you."
Kai huffed. "Okay, fair, but this isn’t about me right now." He pulled back slightly, resting his hands on Jay’s shoulders. "Look, yeah, the villain got away. But we all make mistakes. You think I’ve never botched a mission? You think Cole hasn’t tripped at the worst possible moment? Zane might be a robot, but even he’s made errors before."
Jay sniffled, rubbing at his eyes. "Yeah, but... everyone’s always so quick to blame me." His voice cracked, and Kai’s chest ached.
"Jay, we don’t blame you because we think you’re useless," Kai said firmly. "We blame you because... we get frustrated. And frustration makes us say dumb things." He sighed. "That doesn’t make it right. And I’m sorry."
Jay blinked up at him, surprised. "You’re apologizing to me?"
Kai smirked. "Yeah, don’t get used to it."
Jay let out a weak chuckle, shaking his head.
Kai nudged him. "Hey. You are a good ninja, Jay. And my sister? She wouldn’t be with you if you weren’t. You know how picky Nya is."
Jay snorted. "You’re right about that."
"See? You’re worth more than you think. So stop locking yourself in here and come eat. Lloyd made spaghetti. It’s probably awful, but you need food."
Jay hesitated, but after a moment, he wiped his eyes and nodded. "Okay."
Kai grinned and threw an arm over his shoulders. "Good. And hey, next time I yell at you, just remind me of this moment."
Jay smirked. "Oh, I will. And I’ll make it dramatic."
Kai groaned. "I walked right into that one, didn’t I?"
Jay grinned. "Yep. And you’re stuck with me."
Kai rolled his eyes but squeezed Jay’s shoulder. "Yeah. I wouldn’t have it any other way."
