Maya rubbed her eyes as her sleep
broke in the middle of the night, turning in bed and sighing as her sleep completely faded away. She closed her eyes again in an attempt to sleep, but it had fled.

She looked at the ceiling, adjusting her blanket, and glanced beside her, only to be shocked to see Ekansh sleeping so close to her.

She shifted a little as his head was near her neck, his soft breaths tickling her nape.

Maya turned to him completely, smiling as she observed how calmly he was sleeping. She placed her hand under her head, careful not to wake him, and continued to stare at him, remembering how much she suffered without him.

Her hand inched toward him, wanting to touch him and hug him tightly.

She sighed, fisting her hands, knowing she was expecting more. He was with her; that’s a significant thing for her.

She blushed, realizing how close they were, as if she had forgotten how it felt to be near him.

Her smile faded as she remembered Aahan, the child she had met, and the little sweater in his wardrobe that she had kept for him.

She wished she could give that happiness back to him.

Their child would heal them. At least not entirely, but it would have brought their joy back. She closed her eyes, thinking of his pain. She shivered, imagining how he felt after learning that she had aborted not once, but thrice.

Although the last time I miscarried, it was my fault. It was the punishment for my sins, she thought.

Her hand gripped the fabric above her chest, feeling her heart heavy.

She breathed heavily, feeling stressed.

Ekansh moved in his sleep, and his slumber broke. Siya noticed him stirring and looked at him awake.

She tried to pretend to be asleep, but he was already staring at her. He blinked at her.

"Did you not sleep?"

"My sleep broke... I will sleep again," she said, looking at him.

He nodded, turning to her.

"Why did your sleep break? Nightmare?"

She shook her head negatively.

"Then?" he asked, recalling what the doctor had said about her dreams and lack of sleep.

"Nothing."

He sighed, hearing her answer, and gently grabbed her arm, hugging her, shocking her to the core.

His hands wrapped around her, pulling her completely to him, enveloping her in his embrace. She closed her eyes, trapping her tears inside.

Her hand quivered as she wanted to hold him tight, but she was afraid and in shock. She bit her lips, controlling her sobs as her tears fell stubbornly.

Ekansh hugged her tighter, rubbing her back and feeling her heavy breaths.

"I am here," he whispered.

Maya wrapped her arms around him, clutching his shirt from behind.

"You can tell me what you are feeling or if there’s something bothering you very much. I will listen," he said, caressing her hair as she nodded.

Both stayed silent in each other’s embrace. Her eyes were closed, holding him tight as if he would disappear if she loosened her grip even slightly.

Ekansh felt relief having her in his arms; after listening to the doctor, the thought of losing her completely shook him. He may hate her, but he had loved her immensely, and it's not easy to lose a loved one.
