"I've secured her samples. Now all we need is your wife's."

I tug at my tie, loosening it, and close my eyes. A relief and distress flowing through me at the same time.

I had put Avyaana to the task this morning, so this mountain of confusion and fear in me would cease the soonest. And she for what she's known for, has done her task in less than twelve hours. Which means, half the work is done. Maya's cell samples are here. Now all we need is Esha's. And getting them is my task.

I can't ploy on my wife. I hate to keep her under the darkness even now, but making her worry is also the last thing I want. So, I had asked Avyaana to get what she's got and assured her I'd provide Esha's myself.

"I'll hand it over in the morning." I inform, shifting the phone from my left to right hand. I have no idea how I will get it, but I have to.

"You've got it?"

"No."

"That's what I thought." She hums to pause. "You sure you can? Should I just–"

"No, you don't have to." I cease her words midway. A sudden frustration curling at the tip of my fingers. I don't want her to do it. To hurt Esha deliberately just to get her to the hospital and swipe out some cells. No, not happening. "I'll get it to you myself, Ms. Avyaana."

"Very well then." Her tone is the usual, nonchalant. "I'll get to you tomorrow."

I toss the phone to the bed and run a hand through my hair slowly slumping on the edges of the vanity table. The exhaustion of the day along with the weight of the ongoing task seeping like a dull rain cloud.

I have a test kit tucked in my office bag, right beside where I have one of our photographs together. It's nothing huge, just ten swabs against both her cheeks, and wrap it up. But yet, my heart feels heavy.

Lying has never been my thing. Even now, it's hard.

Especially to her.

Even when this is not an exact form of lying, rather hiding. Just an omission, that too for a time period, I still hate it. I dislike enormous things done from beneath, in the shadows of your closest ones.

But I also realize certain situations and circumstances push you to do so. Like now.

The door swings open, breaking my aimless chain of thoughts that only makes things more complex. Then she steps in, wearing a huge, sweet smile. If I ever feel down, I know where to go.

Her smiles are the reason I honk during traffic, knowing well there's no use. Those warm eyes that shine uniquely only for me are why I accelerate ten over the limit and change lanes like a madman.

Sometimes, people aren't busy chasing the next target in this already running world—they're just in a hurry to reach their peace and calm. Like me.

My arms spread wide open begging for a hug, my whole body and mind yearning for the feeling of her warmth. Her lips fall apart in the softest chuckle and she quickens her pace, walking to me. Once in my vicinity, she wraps her arms around me with a fierce firmness, almost with an intensity of a bear hug. Like she knew just from a single glance, how badly I needed it.

The warmth of her body and silk of her skin make me sigh in serenity. My arms surrender around her waist, and I rest my head against her soft chest, listening to the blessed, rhythmic thrum of her heart.

One of her palms slips beneath my shirt, the coolness of her baby-like skin presses against the heat of my back, while her other hand threads into my locks, ruffling them gently.
