POV: Darleen

Skylar cried herself to sleep. She has to breathe out of her mouth. Her eyes are all puffy and red, her face all splotchy as her hair sticks to her damp cheeks. I reach over and move a strand of her ginger hair before it can get stuck in her mouth.

Kenzie comes back into the room, letting Ace off his leash.

She took him outside to use the bathroom.

"How is she?" she comes and lies next to me on Skylar's bed.

"A mess," I sigh.

"And you?"

"You tell me? Do I look as bad as her?" I turn to face Kenzie.

"No," she brushes my hair behind my ear.

"I feel it," I say.

"Sorry, I kissed her... just seeing her hurting like that." She looks down.

"Don't apologize; if you hadn't done it, I would have," I admit.

"Something about when Skylar cries... makes you want to—"

"Punch someone?"

"Kill someone," Kenzie says

We look at each other and chuckle.

She snuggles up with me.

"She needs to get back in therapy," Kenzie concludes.

"No kidding. I never understood why she had such deep self-esteem issues. The girl is hot, sweet, funny, pretty much perfect."

"She literally has ladies lining up at the door." Kenzie adds.

"I guess it only makes sense in Skylar logic." I sigh.

Kenzie also sighs and relaxes into me.

I rub her shoulder.

"So what's the plan here?" she asks me.

"I don't know, honestly, I'm just playing it by ear."

"She wanted to marry you..." Kenzie says.

Those words leave a sting in my heart.

To think all that time ago, when Skylar made me that silly book, she always planned on marrying me. Meaning she always planned on me being the one. She never planned on hurting me. She was in it for the long run.

"How does that make you feel?" Kenzie asks.

"Awful," I whisper.

"It just proves she loved you from the start, that she wasn't planning on leaving you for Jade."

"Yeah... which makes me feel worse. How did things turn out like this?" I rest my head on top of Kenzie's.

"You tell me. You are the one who still carries that book she made with you everywhere."

"I keep telling myself I'll throw it away, but... I can't seem to do it." I admit.

"If... if you want to be with her. If you want another chance. I'll leave. I can get out of the way."

"Don't, don't do that." I pull her tighter in my arms. "Don't start making decisions on your own before we even know what this is."

"Well, clearly she loves you, you love her... What else is there to think about?" Kenzie says.

"You," Skylar says, startling us.

I turn to her in bed.

"Sorry, did we wake you?" I ask.
