"Ah, crap."

Jesse's phone slipped out of his hands and nearly slammed into his face (but didn't because of his super-fast reflexes, he thought to himself). He picked it back up and shuffled a bit to get comfortable once more. Currently, he was lying on the floor mattress meant for Petra since she was in the living room with her family and he had grown bored by himself. Ever since he asked Petra out four days ago, all the adults in the house had decided to make it their job to teach the couple the "basics" of a good relationship and how to maintain modesty for parental approval — and that included not sleeping in the same bed at night.

Every night, Aunt Carrie peeked into the kids' room to make sure there was no secret hand-holding. Jesse was sure their aunt didn't really care, but he wouldn't be surprised if she just wanted to be nosy and see if anything was happening between him and his newfound girlfriend. Who he happened to know ever since he was a kid. And who also happened to be living with him at the current time.

Okay, yeah, he could see why the parents were concerned.

But Jesse wasn't a bad guy. At least, he considered himself to be a pretty decent one. Having a cool and awesome girlfriend was just really exciting. Nothing was wrong with wanting to pinch her cheeks from cuteness aggression while she was sleeping, right? And maybe sneak in a forehead kiss.

His face immediately flushed from the thought, and his phone fell from his grasp once more, this time making full contact with the bridge of his nose. What was he thinking? They had only just gotten together, and already, he was thinking of stuff like that.

With a sigh, he slid his phone off his face and sat up, holding his head with his hand. As he tried to calm himself down, the bedroom door suddenly burst open with a slam, and Jesse flew off the mattress in surprise.

"... Uh, you good?" said his sister in the doorway. "It's just me."

"Y-yeah, yeah! You just scared me, sis," he nervously chuckled, straightening out his clothes.

The girl merely raised an eyebrow but shrugged it off, determining it to be too much of a bother. She walked over to her side of the room and tossed her stuff down, slipping off her socks and unclipping her hair. "Did you and Petra finish your work?"

Jesse slightly coughed at the mention of Petra. "Uh, well..."

His sister sighed in exasperation and shook her head. "Bruh, you know I don't really care for homework either, but it shouldn't be that hard to finish."

"It's chemistry," he groaned. "I don't wanna do math with letters..."

"Dang. That's rough, buddy. Anyway, I'm gonna shower, have fun with that."

The boy pouted as she grabbed clean clothes from her wardrobe and locked the bathroom door behind her. He really didn't want to, but he had to get his work done at some point. There was nothing else to do other than wait for his sister to finish washing up or wait for Petra once she was done talking with her parents.

He felt his face turn red again at the thought of Petra. Pull it together, he mentally yelled at himself. Jesse slapped the sides of his face and stood up to rummage through his backpack and begin working. Yet, as he sat down at his desk and stared at the pieces of paper in front of him, he felt himself growing fidgety and impatient as the thoughts bounced over and over like a torturous pinball machine. This was not working — every attempt to not think about her just made him think of her more. He flailed around in his seat, trying his hardest to stop thinking and focus, but it still wasn't going anywhere.
