NOTE: this was written early season 2 so if you're reading this like 3 years later, it might be completely debunked lol. ALSO S2 SPOILERS!!
Ok so, I've had this theory since the end of season one and as season two has been airing and I've talked to our Angel fictive about it, we have a guess on what exactly it is that gets a sinner redeemed.
You have to do a positive act that is equal too, or greater than your sin. I'll use Pentious as an example since we know what his sin was. He witnessed a murder and did nothing, leading to five victims in total being killed. But in the s1 finale, he sacrificed himself to save the lives of other people. That act was greater than his sin, where he did nothing which lead to people being killed. He redeemed that action by sacrificing himself to save lives, notably the same number of victims that were killed. Angel, Charlie, Vaggie, Husk and Nifty makes five. Yes Alastor was there too but he was kinda doing his own thing separate to the defending the hotel, he was more there to further his own plans.
So our theory is if you can make up for your original sin that got you dammed, you can be redeemed. Which also means there may be a handful of REALLY bad sins that can't be redeemed because there is no equal to it to balance it out. I doubt that a child sexual abuser could be redeemed, because even if they went on to save a child from abuse, their victim is still suffering for all eternity with the trauma and will never be able to undo that damage (heal yes, but not undo). But someone like a drug dealer who later went on to run a rehab centre could be redeemed or a bank robber who went on to donate the same (or more) amount to charity could be redeemed.
SOME really bad sins may be able to be redeemed based on the context, like if someone committed survival cannibalism (like they were lost in the wilderness and had to eat their already dead friend in order to survive long enough to be rescued) or someone who killed a person in self defence or because an abused ordered them to, and they feel guilt about it. If you were a victim of the circumstance, or being controlled or manipulated into committing the act you didn't want to do, you could be redeemed. But if you did it on your own free will for selfish reasons, you couldn't.
In our framework of this theory there's like a level system of sins:
Standard dumbass act: a mistake or something that didn't hurt anyone too badly.
Bad: people got hurt, but you feel bad about it and try to make up for it.
Really bad: people got REALLY hurt, traumatised or killed, you feel no remorse for it.
Ultra evil: unforgivable acts like CSA and torturing people to death etc. you take pleasure in it and have zero remorse or guilt.
Victim of circumstance: a kind of grey area where you didn't want to commit the act, but we're forced to for some reason outside of your control. The act could be anywhere from standard to ultra evil, but you were ultimately not in control of your actions and feel remorse and guilt for it.
So basically you CAN be redeemed but depending on what your sin is, it may be very difficult to because you'd need to commit an equal to or greater than act of selflessness and kindness to balance out your original sin.
So, who do we think can be redeemed of the main cast?
(Excluding Charlie bc you know she's princess)
Angel- yes. His sin is likely something related to his mafia life, so it may be quite hard to find an equal act, but it's not impossible. He may have to sacrifice himself or save someone from a mafia crime or something.
Husk- don't know actually. We don't know enough of his human life yet. Although I'd assume it's gambling related or maybe it's something like scamming money out of people, stealing money to gamble away something like that. In which chase he could earn the money legitimately and donate it all to make up for it.
Nifty- no idea what her unhinged ass did to get sent to hell, so it's hard to say. She seems kind of murderous so... maybe if she prevented a murder or sacrificed herself? Although she seems pretty content with being an unhinged little critter.
Alastor - no, actually I don't think he can. At least not unless something absolutely inanely major happened to him that shakes him to his core and makes him regret his life as a literal cannibalistic serial killer. He's not remorseful, he took joy in killing and still seeks power and control in hell as an overload. So unless he were to be knocked so far down he does a massive 180 and starts feeling real remorse and goes on to sacrifice himself to save someone, I think he's stuck in hell.
Vaggie- I don't know if fallen angels can re-ascend, if they can I think she definitely could. But she doesn't want to.
The Vees - no. They're too fucked up. Especially Valentinos sexual abusive ass. He can get the wood chipper. Vox is too much of a power hungry piss baby to ever admit he's wrong so he can't even begin to feel remorse. And tbh, we don't know enough about Velevette yet, but I'd assume no given she's siding with two asshole willingly.
Also side note, I fucking hope pets get to ascend with their owners because if FAT NUGGETS GETS LEFT BEHIND IN HELL WHILE ANGEL ASCENDS I'M KILLING. He goes with Angel or we riot.
Ok, that's my theory. Oneshots and chapters back soon, we've been doing a lot of concept art for not-fanfic projects recently and then season 2 came out so we've been watching that. Bye for now!
