Chapter 57 - The Weight of the Codex
The council chamber lay deep beneath the restored citadel, its ancient stone walls etched with runes that faintly glowed as if listening. Outside, the city still bore the scars of occupation-collapsed towers, shattered bridges, and the quiet grief of a people waiting for hope to return.
At the center of the chamber stood Lysandra, her silver hair tied back, hands resting on the obsidian table. Beside her were her sons-Lyrien, tall and sharp-eyed, and Sirius, composed but visibly tense. Around them gathered the last defenders of Haven: elves, half-elves, beastkin, and humans alike.
The future of the world rested in this room.
Lyrien broke the silence first.
"We can reclaim the city," he said firmly. "Cut off Dark Haven's supply lines, disable their orbital weapon, and restore this world to its original glory. We've rebuilt once before-we can do it again."
A murmur of agreement followed.
But Tony, arms crossed and jaw tight, shook his head slowly.
"Look," he said honestly, his voice grounded but heavy, "I don't want to crush your enthusiasm-but Dark Haven isn't an enemy you poke and walk away from. They're not just conquerors. They're calculated. We know what they're capable of."
The room quieted.
Sirius exhaled, then stepped forward.
"And their objective isn't simply planetary domination," he added. "Dark Haven seeks the Codex. They already possess part of it."
Several faces stiffened.
"Thanks to our mistress, Austria," Sirius continued, "a seal was placed upon the Codex. Infinite cannot access its full power-because his heart is impure. The artifact rejects him."
Lyrien frowned. "And if that seal fails?"
He hesitated. "What happens if Infinite touches it... and makes a wish?"
The question lingered like a shadow.
Abisai finally spoke, his voice low.
"I don't know everything," he admitted. "The Codex is older than any empire. What we do know is this-it can rewrite reality. Grant a wish beyond limitation."
A pause.
"But every wish demands a price."
His gaze dropped briefly before lifting again.
"The cost could destroy this planet... or worse, collapse our entire solar system."
Gasps echoed softly.
"The original Emperor of Calamity believed he could outsmart it," Abisai went on. "His desire was simple-to bring back his wife and unborn child. But my mother, Nova, studied the Codex. She told me it doesn't grant mercy. It interprets desire, not intention."
Lysandra clenched her fist.
"We safeguarded the middle fragment for generations," Lyrien said. "It never corrupted us."
Sirius met his eyes.
"That's because the Codex was incomplete. Separate, it is dormant. Whole... it is absolute. You would not withstand its full capacity."
Silence fell again.
Lyrien turned sharply to Sirius. "Then tell us-what is Infinite's endgame?"
Sirius straightened.
"He intends to merge worlds."
Confusion rippled through the chamber.
"This world," Sirius explained, "and the Netherworld-the Land of the Dead. Infinite wants to fuse them, turn existence itself into an eternal battlefield. Life, death, and suffering woven together into endless carnage."
