REIKO
I stared ahead, not even trying to conceal my distaste as the gun pressed against my head, just above my ear.
"Have any last words, Konomi?"
"Go to hell," I replied, eyeing in the crowd that awaited my demise. They all wanted me dead, and I didn't care if I was alive or not. I had finished my duty for those I worked for, so I had no more purpose in my eyes. "I don't care if you send me there or not, but-" I turned my head so my gaze met his. "I'll see you there at some point soon."
With that, I faced the crowd again, my eyes hovering on each and every face, searching for one.
He was out back, the dark shadows he had always feared obscuring his sharp features. But I could feel Cole Niago's eyes on me, a small spark of light in the hidden darkness that gave away where they were.
He seemed startled when I nodded to him, taking a step forward so that he was visible. His features looked so hollow, so...dead, gaunt. He had given up long ago when his brother had died, surrendering everything- his health, even- to death. And now he was going to watch me die.
"Fine, have it your way," the man said stiffly before he roared to the crowd, "Are you ready to have this wretched, vile soul to be erased from our world?"
My gut twisted at the eager thunder from them, screaming for me to be dead. I glanced at Cole, who didn't look away, but he had crept closer, a few meters behind the man who held the gun.
"Three!"
"Two!" they yelled back.
"One-!"
The gun went off.
I opened my eyes, blinking in surprise at the sight that lay before me. Dead. Every last one, every least spectator- dead. Their eyes were open but glazed over, lifeless.
"Reiko."
With a startled gasp, I felt someone touch my shoulder lightly. "Cole," I murmured. "What'd you do?"
His gaze flicked to the side at the now-dead captor, the gun on the ground but aimed towards his heart.I could see the emotions swirling through Cole's eyes, which were currently residing back to their dark grey color. "I let loose," he whispered miserably. "I let it control me. I couldn't let you go, too, Reiko..."
I was surprised when his arms wrapped around my torso, but then they were gone as quickly the hug had come, and I looked up into his face.
"I understand," I said softly, reaching up to brush strands from his forehead. They were stuck to his clammy skin, plastered there by the sweat.
This Cole was much more...vulnerable then the one I knew before. But it didn't matter. I knew that there was one person in the world who cares.
And that was enough to stop death.
A/N~
Yeah, short, I know. And I feel like Cole was OOC. I dunno. TT_TT I'm tired.
