'Silver's POV'
I lay awake on the metal bed, Julia between me and the wall, curled up against my side.
She had trouble getting to sleep, she was worried about me, because of the whole 'I must have a child' thing. But, she was also worried about what they were doing to Khaos, since, in a way, he defied them as well.
I had to tell her many times not to worry about us, that we can handle ourselves... She didn't believe me, she knows that we have no control over what they do to us.
"Silver..." My head whips to the door, I see the silhouette of Khaos. I stand up, tuck the blanket in around Julia so she doesn't get cold, and walk to the door
"How'd you get out of your cell?" I ask, looking at where his face should be
"Oh, I don't have a cell, I have a room, and I'm allowed to roam around all the time..." I can tell that he feels bad that we got a cell and he gets a room, just by the way he answers
"Oh... Well, why'd you come here than?" I ask
"Because I want to talk to you... But, not here." He extends a log claw and picks the lock on our door. He opens the door and I follow him down long hallways, then up a series of staircases. Soon, we're on a roof, but I can see that it's caged in
"So, how did they capture you?" He asks me like it's not the most painful memory of my existence, even though I don't remember fully. I can't find it in me, the whole story, only bits and pieces
"I don't remember..."
"You don't?" He seems surprised
"You do?"
"Plain as day." He sighs "I thought everyone would remember the most traumatic day of their life..."
"How'd they get you than?" He looks directly at me
"I wasn't captured... My parents were mutants, they were forced to have me, then they were killed right in front of me... After that I was mutated even more, until I was perfect..." So that's why he is so against the idea of having a child...
"I'm sorry Khaos..." I don't know what else to say
"For what? It's not like you put me here... Besides, your past is probably just as bad as mine..." I sigh as well
"Let's change the subject... Um, how old are you?" I ask the first question that comes to mind that doesn't involve the institute
"Twenty three, what about you?" He looks me up and down
"Nineteen, I think. I don't know for sure." He looks at me like he's confused
"They didn't tell you how old you are?" He asks, I shake my head.
The more we talk, the more clear it becomes that he has a much higher status than me. I was mutated in a little institute on the outskirts of this giant city, and he was mutated... Here....
"So, why haven't they taken control of your brain yet?" I ask him
"They've tried, but it didn't work," I nod
I don't know if it's a coincidence that they can't control either of their most successful experiments brains, or if they're just really unlucky
"What about you? I'm sure they'd love to have control over your brain,"
"Same thing, they tried, but it didn't work."
This goes on for many nights; I put Julia to sleep, than Khaos comes to get me and we sneak away to the roof. Surprisingly, nobody has gotten suspicious yet.
One night, we're out on the roof, asking each other questions, like usual. I lean on the rail at the side of the building, he does the same beside me
"So, what do you think about them forcing us to have a child?" He asks suddenly. I think about it for a minute, making sure to choose my words carefully
"Well, I don't want to bring a child into this wold, at least, not until I destroy every sick white coat in existence." I feel my hand form a fist
"Yeah... I'm really beginning to wonder what Vanessa meant by 'desperate measures'."
"I don't want to think about it." It sends a shiver down my spine, they could do any number of things... None of which seem humane...
"Okay, well, I heard you had escaped your last institution... uh..." He seems to be choosing a question "who'd you take with you?" He finally asks
"I took my two closest friends: Lilian and Dezmend, and Julia." He nods
"Where are the other two now?"
"Lilian is back with the people who took us in, and Dezmend is... Is... Dead..." I drop my head, biting my lip to the point of drawing blood
"Silver, don't cry, it's not your fault..." He touches my shoulder, I pull back
"It was my fault! I shot him! I had to!" His eyes widen
"Silver, calm down-"
"Calm down?! Do you know what it feels like to be forced to shoot someone who's been there for you since you met?!" I begin to raise my voice
"No, I don't know, because nobody was ever there for me! I've watched countless mutants die at my expense!" I wipe furiously at the tears that dare to stream down my cheeks. I feel the need for someone to hold me and tell me everything's going to be okay, even though I know it's not
"Khaos, I'm sorry... I didn't mean to snap at you like that..."
"It's okay, I shouldn't have asked about your personal life."
I use the back of my hand to wipe away the remaining tears on my cheeks
"We should get back-"
"You never should have left." Vanessa appears in our field of view, white coats surrounding her
"Vanessa I-"
"What Khaos? You can explain? No, you can't. Why were you doing up here anyway? Planning your escape? Because if that's it-" this time, I cut her off
"We were talking, like civilized people do!" I raise my voice
"It seems that somebody wants to see her punishment sooner than I thought." Vanessa's smirk glows in the dim light. Punishment?! What does she mean?!
"Take them both to the room!"
