Hiding behind a mask

Masks hide what we really feel
We know the deal
We do it anyway
And that's perfectly okay

Masks are there to protect us from dangerous words
Masks are there to protect us from hurt
Masks are there to protect us from the cold
Masks are there to protect us from the past that's old

Masks hide what we really feel inside
But for how long can we hide?
Can we really hide for a long period of time?
I don't think so, and, even if we do, it's not a crime!

Masks cover our real face
But do we ever, our real face, embrace?
Do we ever take off the masks even for a little while?
Do we ever take off the masks even when we smile?

Or do we smile with our masks still on our face?
Do we smile with our masks still in place?
We have a lot of masks on our face, not just one
Although, we think we only have one, we have a ton

They hide our true nature because we don't want to be seen
Because what if, once seen, we'll never be unseen?
What if, once we take off the masks, our true nature will come out for everyone to see?
What if we don't know what's behind the mask because we never let it be?

Masks also protect us, as I mentioned before
They do a lot of things, not just one chore
What if we don't know our true nature because we never let our masks off of our face?
What if we don't want to take off the masks because they're covered with fancy lace?
