"Did you hear?" My friend, Florentine, asked. We were sipping coffee at Tastee's and chatting.
"Hear what?" I asked her. She was always coming up with news I doubt even the prime minister knows.
"That the hot, single, super billionaire, Dimitri Cromwell, is coming to Jamaica," she half whispered, half screamed.
"Who is Dimitri Cromwell?" I asked "And why should I care".
"Who cares who he is?" She looked at me as though I've lost my mind. "All I know is that he's hot, rich and single. Need I know more?"
"Well, unless he can make JA$75,000 appear at my door on Monday then I don't care," I told her. My rent was due on Monday and I only came up with a quarter of the money.
"Actually, he can. Did you hear me say he was rich or weren't you listening?"
"Well he could be living next door for all I care," I said. He was the last thing on my mind right now.
"Ok you can continue to worry about money and I will continue to fantasize about Dimitri." She said and I gave her a look.
"What?" She said. "If you saw him you'd be the same." She took out her iPhone and began searching.
I didn't bother to ask her where she got a new iPhone since, though she was as broke-ass as I was, she had a new phone each week. She turned the screen around and showed my the picture of a man wearing a jacket suit. He had dark hair and a to-die-for-handsome face. Through his shirt you could see he had a very sexy upper body. In summary, he was every bit as hot as Flo said and then some.
"OK. I see your point," I said "But fantasizing about some billionaire isn't going to pay my bills."
We left Tastee's soon after and I took a bus home (its not like I had anywhere else to go).
The bus let me off on a main road so I had to walk for 20 minutes before I got to my house.
When I got there, there was a notice on my door. I took it off and it read:
JUST A REMINDER THAT YOUR OVERDUE RENT WILL BE COLLECTED NO LATER THAN MONDAY. IF YOU FAIL TO PAY IT, YOU WILL BE EVICTED FROM THE BUILDING.
Signed: Mr. Wright
(Landlord)I sighed and crushed the paper into a ball, then threw it into the trashcan by the door.
Finding my keys in my pocket, I unlocked the door and stepped in. The air inside was hot and stuffy so I opened all the windows and doors. The electricity and water bills I collected from the post office yesterday still laid unopened on the sofa. I had been too scared to open them. Grabbing an envelope opener, I opened the electricity bill first and skipped to the total. JA$132,000. This included overdue balances and GCT. I opened the water bill. JA$94,000.
My water and electricity could be disconnected any day now and I had no idea how I would pay for any of them, or my rent.
I live in a small, but cozy house. It has 2 bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room, a bathroom, and a washroom. I moved in a few years ago when I left Kingston to live in Montego Bay.
I thought about Kingston. Home. I thought about why I left. Then I sat on the sofa and let the tears fall.
