"Dimitri!" I continued to yell, but there was still no answer. My heart hammered violently against my ribcage as I started to hyperventilate.
Where the hell is Dimitri? Oh God! Oh God! What if something bad happened to him?!
I rushed across the room and peered through the broken window and into the dark night. The only thing visible in the dim moonlight was the shadows of the trees that surrounded the backyard.
"Dimitri?" I said through the window. The only answer I got was the whistling of the wind through the tree branches.
I've never been more panicky in my entire life; not when Kevin threatened to kill me, not when I had to pack up and leave my family, not ever. I don't know why but I just couldn't imagine anything bad happening to Dimitri.
I ran as fast as my feet would allow through the house and out the front door, then around to the back. I could hardly see anything.
"Dimitri?" I called for the millionth time. Still no answer.
I jumped as I heard something move inside the house.
My legs shook as I walked back towards the front door. With a trembling hand, I opened the door and slowly entered, trying to be as quiet as possible.
I thoroughly searched the living room and the kitchen. There was no one there.
I moved slowly towards Dimitri's room and peered around the door. When I didn't see anyone I walked in completely and looked around. No one was there.
I walked to the room in which I was staying. The door was closed. I heard movement inside. My first instincts were to run away but my hands involuntarily reached out and slowly turned the door knob.
Holding my breath I gently pushed the door open.
I was both shocked and relieved at what I saw.
Dimitri was standing inside the room with a long butcher's knife held above his head, ready to attack.
As he saw me he dropped the knife and, without thinking, I threw my trembling body into his open arms.
"Where were you?!" I asked him.
"Someone threw a rock into my bedroom window," he explained. "I went outside to try and find out who it was but I didn't see anyone. Then I came here to see if you were all right only to find out you weren't here. You had me worried sick. Where were you?"
I stepped out of his embrace. "I heard the sound but when I got to your room I didn't see you there, or outside. I thought they had kidnapped you or something."
"I think Kevin or his enemies had something to do with this," he said. "They know you're here. You should call your family right away and tell them everything so they can be ready by tomorrow morning."
I nodded and grabbed my cell phone from the night table. I dialled my mother's number and listened.
"Hey, sugar!" My mother's cheerful voice said from the other end. Though I called her twice every week, I was very pleased to hear her voice.
I had never told her about what happened with me and Kevin. When her place got trashed I had let her believe that it was just a random burglary, and she never questioned our divorce. She knew I would tell her all about it when I was ready.
I listened to her as she talked about all that happened since I last called her.
Then I told her everything. She listened as I gave her all the details of what happened and told her our plan.
When I was done I waited for her to say something.
It took her a while to answer.
"Honey, why did you keep something this important from me?" She finally said.
"I didn't want to upset you," was all I could say.
She sighed. "So what's going to happen?" She asked.
"Just pack and be ready by tomorrow morning. Someone will be there to pick you up and take you to the safe house. I'll be coming to visit you there after I leave the police station. Pass it on to the others."
"Ok." She sighed again. "You be careful, ok?"
"I will," I assured her. "I love you. "
"Love you too, honey. Take care of yourself." She hung up.
Dimitri had left the room while I was on the phone. Now he entered again, carrying his cell phone. He sat on the edge of the bed.
"I just called some of the best bodyguards in the business," he said. "They will transport your family to the safe house and guard them there. You don't have to worry."
That did nothing to lessen my worry.
"So we'll take the chip to the police tomorrow?" I asked him.
"Yea," he said. "As soon as your family gets to the safe house."
I nodded. "I'm going back to bed. I need to get some sleep."
"You should," he said, getting up. "I'll be in the bedroom next to mine if you need me."
I nodded and he left.
I climbed into bed and closed my eyes, then opened them again. All I could think of was Kevin hurting my family. What if he did? How would I ever get that off my conscience? I would die if he hurt any of them.
I closed my eyes again and willed myself to fall asleep. I couldn't. I opened them again and just laid there staring at the ceiling for what felt like hours.
I closed my eyes again and had the imagery of Kevin getting to my mother's house before the bodyguards and slitting everyone's throat with a silver knife, then coming here to kill me with the same knife that had my mother's blood.
I tore open my eyes. I shouldn't allow myself to think like that.
"It's all going to be ok," I said to myself, but my mind contradicted the words even before they were out.
I closed my eyes for the last time. Whatever would happen the next day was unpredictable, but right then, all I really needed was some sleep.
