It had been two and a half weeks since the accident and I was still staying at Dimitri's. I had practically pleaded for him to let me go home but he insisted that I stayed. I hardly ever left the house without him and when I did he was right there when I got back, waiting to ask me a gazillion times if I'm ok.He brought me coffee every morning, since it's the only thing he doesn't burn. I did all the cooking: I had to eat and I really didn't trust him in the kitchen.
I was still a bit scared about the accident but being around Dimitri and his reassurances somehow made me feel a whole lot better.
We had decided that we would go with what Dimitri had suggested. We would get all my family members to a safe house in St. Ann's and hand over the tape to the police, then get them out when everything was over. Dimitri made all the arrangements and we decided to tell my family about it the on Tuesday.
I hadn't seen or heard from Amanda since our last encounter. Flo claimed she killed her and, I swear, I believe her.
I was seated on a recliner in the living room at about 5:30pm reading a fashion magazine when Dimitri walked in carrying some papers. He had been out all day 'taking care of things with his lawyer'.
"Finally!" He said, as he sat on a loveseat opposite me.
"What?" I asked him, looking up from the magazine.
He smiled. "My lawyer finally made her sign the papers. I'm now officially divorced with all my belonging still where they belong."
I let out a quiet sigh of relief at his statement then mentally pinched myself. What was I relieved about? So what if he was no longer married?
"That's nice," I told him. "Congrats."
"C'mon, lets go celebrate!" He got up from the seat with a wide grin on his face.
"Celebrate?" I said, looking around the room. "Are you forgetting that it's almost Christmas? You need some decorations up in here. We'll go Christmas shopping then we'll celebrate."
It was already December 20th and this house was not showing it.
I had gone to my house the previous morning and had tried to repack all the things that I had bought when I went shopping with Flo, though most of them were either torn or broken. I had put what could be used away for next Christmas, since there was no way I could use them this year.
"We'll celebrate then we'll go Christmas shopping," Dimitri said.
I smiled. "I wasn't asking for your opinion," I said. "We'll go shopping first."
He smiled and held up his hands in surrender. "Ok," he said. "You the boss. I'll go get ready." He left.
I put down the magazine and got up, then went to get ready. I showered and put on shorts, a simple Polo shirt, and flip flops that I had brought from my house that morning.
When I returned to the living room Dimitri was already there, wearing jeans, a T-shirt, and sneakers.
"Lets go," I told him. He lead me to his garage and we got into his Lamborghini and left.
We moved from store to store, leaving each with armfuls of shopping bags. Shopping had never been so fun!!
When we were done shopping we got something to eat then returned to the house. I was exhausted to the max!
We had barely put away the bags when Dimitri said, "now can we celebrate?"
I would have given anything for a glass of wine!
"Gladly," I said and followed him into the kitchen.
I sat on a stool at the small bar in one corner of the kitchen as Dimitri got a bottle of wine from the cabinet and two glasses, then sat on the stool to my right. He poured wine into both glasses then placed the bottle on the counter.
"To freedom!" He said, raising his glass.
I took the other glass, nodded, and raised it to meet his.
"To freedom," I repeated, then brought it to my lips and took a sip. It was, by far, the finest wine I had ever tasted.
"This is good," I told Dimitri as I took another sip.
"Yea. I brought it with me from Australia. It's one of the best."
I nodded, then took another sip.
We talked for what may have been forever. Our conversation ranged from our childhood to our worst dates to our most embarrassing moments to things I didn't think I'd ever tell him.
I felt comfortable talking to him, like I could tell him anything. He made me laugh so much I thought I would get permanent laryngitis.
A few hours and two bottles later, I began to feel a bit tipsy. I got up from the stool.
"I'm going to sleep," I said. "I'll see you in the morning."
He got up also and took up the glasses and bottles.
"Ok. Goodnight," he said. "Sweet dreams."
I nodded and headed towards the bathroom. I showered and brushed my teeth, then got to the bedroom and climbed into bed.
As soon as my head hit the pillow, I began to doze off. I was already fast asleep when I was startled by a loud, crashing sound, resembling the breaking of glass.
I quickly got into a sitting position. Everything was quiet. I thought maybe I had dreamt it.
I laid down again and closed my eyes. I was startled by that sound again. It was definitely the breaking of glass.
I jumped out of bed and rushed to the living room. Nothing there.
I rushed to the kitchen. Nothing there.
I hurried to Dimitri's bedroom. I gasped as I saw the curtains by the window dancing freely in the wind and parts of what used to be a window lying on the ground in shatters.
Dimitri was nowhere in sight.
The beating of my heart escalated to bullet speed as my body began to shake violently.
"Dimitri?" I yelled.
No answer.
"Dimitri!"
No answer.
"DIMITRI!"
