Inside the room was smaller than I'd expected. There was a table in the centre, around which were four chairs. Two of the chairs were occupied, one by a friendly-looking woman and the other by a man.
The uniformed officer led us over to the table, then motioned for us to sit. When we did, he left the room.
"So..." The lady started with a smile. "Tell us what happened."
My heart suddenly felt heavier, so heavy that it tore at my chest and I thought it would sink to the pit of my stomach. My head hurt. I couldn't understand why. I was perfectly fine just a few seconds before.
Something wasn't right.
"Um... Ms. Monroe?"
I looked up to see the lady looking at me with some concern etched on her face.
"Are you okay?" She asked me.
I nodded and gave her a weak smile.
"Can you tell us what happened?"
I nodded.
I tried to tell her all that happened from the moment I was kidnapped, but found it hard to remember most of the things. I was distracted by something. My body was there but not even I knew where my mind was.
Dimitri popped in every now and then to state something or another that I had left out. The lady asked us so many questions while we were talking that it was beggining to get very annoying. The man, however, was quiet and only made jottings on a notepad.
I was too distracted to give a straight story so most of what I said didn't make sense until I went over it again...and again...and again.
About three hours later we were still in the room going over the same story for the millionth time.
"That's all for now," the lady said when we were finished.
I breathed a sigh of relief.
"Unless there is evidence that says otherwise, Mr. Cromwell, you will be let off for self-defence, but until the case is closed, you are not allowed to leave the country and neither are you, Ms. Monroe."
I think I saw Dimitri nod.
"Okay. You may leave. Thanks for your time."
Depression enveloped me, and brought with it a heavy burden that landed on my shoulders.
Something was wrong. But what?
"Vivica? Are you okay?" It was Dimitri.
I looked up to see everyone looking at me with a blank expression. Dimitri had risen, as if to leave, but I had remained seated, staring at my hands in my lap.
Feeling a bit embarassed, I hurriedly rose from the seat and followed Dimitri out the door.
We then exited the building and walked over to the car.Dimitri opened the door for me and when I got in, he closed it and entered the driver's side.
"What was that all about?" Dimitri asked as soon as he started driving.
"I don't know," I answered. "Something just doesn't feel right."
"What? What's wrong?"
"I don't know," I repeated.
"Vivica, you're scaring me. What is it?"
"I don't know."
Silence.
More silence.
I still couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.
