My body froze as I stared at the scene infront of me, and a spasm of panic rushed rapidly through me.My first instinct was to turn around and run away from there as fast as possible, but somehow I started walking slowly around the living room, staring at the awful mess.
My body shook as I walked through the adjoining door and into the kitchen. It was also ransacked. I gasped as I saw all my dishes and glasses laying on the ground in pieces.
My bedroom was trashed also. My bed was unrecognizable. It had been cut several times and no doubt searched. The foam from my pillows were everywhere and the cases were thrown carelessly in a corner of the floor. All the furniture were either broken or thrown onto the floor or the bed.
The other bedroom was in a similar condition, and so was the bathroom and the washroom.
I returned to my bedroom and dropped myself onto my now ruined bed.
I knew it was close to impossible for Amanda to get here and do all this damage and leave before I got home but I prayed that it was her, that she maybe sent someone to do it when I left, though I knew all too well that none of this was true.
I closed my eyes and pinched myself on my arm in hope that I was dreaming, but when I opened them again everything was the same as before.
I pulled up my legs and wrapped my arms around them, then dropped my forehead onto my knees.
Tears welled up in my eyes and I allowed them to fall.
I got up and paced the floor. I refused to believe this was real.
I jumped, startled, as I heard a loud knock on my door.
The knocking continued as I rushed to the bathroom, washed and dried my face, and checked my reflection in the mirror. I looked like a mess.
I cleared my throat and tried to make my voice sound as calm as possible.
"Who is it?" I asked as I came into the living room.
"It's me," I heard Dimitri say.
I froze. I couldn't let him in with the house like this. I couldn't let him know anything about all this.
"I'm not feeling well," I lied. "Can you come back in the morning?" What the heck was he doing here so late anyways?
"What's wrong?" He asked, concern evident in his voice.
"I just don't feel too well," I said. "Maybe I'm just tired. Come back tomorrow, ok?"
"Will you at least let me in?" He said. "It's kinda weird talking to the door."
I sighed. "I'm-" I stopped as I heard a loud clap of thunder and the threatened rain suddenly began hammering on the roof.
I panicked. I couldn't let him stand outside in the rain and I definitely couldn't let him in.
"Vivica." His voice was persistent.
Oh, what the heck!
I walked over to the door and opened it. The rain was falling heavily outside, and the trees danced swiftly to the sound of the heavy wind and the beat of the raindrops.
Dimitri walked past me and I locked the door.
I turned around and saw Dimitri staring wide eyed around the room.
"What the hell happened here?" He asked me.
"It's nothing," I said. My voice shook as I did and I tried hard to stop my body from shaking.
"It's obviously something," he said. "The place is a mess."
"It's nothing. I was looking for something important and got a little angry when I couldn't find it. That's all."
"Vivica, I'm not stupid. Talk to me. Did Amanda do this?"
I wasn't sure what to say.
"Yes?" It came out more like a question.
"Why would she?" He asked.
"How should I know?" I snapped. "Crazy people don't need a reason to do crazy things."
He suddenly started to stare at me with a worried expression.
"What?" I asked.
"You're shaking", he said, coming up beside me and taking my hands in his. "Please tell me what's wrong."
I glanced down at my hands as I felt the warmth of his touch.
"It's fine," I barely whispered.
He lead me to the sofa and we both sat down. He tried to look me in the eyes but I looked away. I couldn't even look at him.
"Vivica?"
"It's fine."
"Vivica, I can't help you unless you talk to me. Just tell me what's wrong."
I bit into the inside of my lips in an attempt to hold back the tears that threatened to fall.
"I can't," I said.
"Why?"
"I just can't." My voice shook as I spoke and the tears welled up in my eyes once again.
I wanted to pull away and run to my room or something so I wouldn't have to cry infront of him but I couldn't find the strength to.
"There has to be a reason," he whispered. "What is it?"
His eyes met mine, and I saw genuine concern in them. They were beautiful and welcoming and held nothing but warmth.
We were quiet for a moment and the only sound that could be heard was the rapping of the rain against the roof.
"I can't," I said after a while, breaking both the silence and our eye contact.
He let go of one of my hands and used his hand to gently lift my chin upward, causing me to look him in the eye again.
"It's ok," he whispered. "Tell me."
I couldn't hold it any longer. The tears escaped and ran down my cheeks. Dimitri wrapped his arms around me and pressed my face into his rock-hard chest.
I let everything out. I cried long and hard while Dimitri rocked me back and forth and gently rubbed my back.
"It's ok," he kept on saying. "It's going to be fine."
I wanted to believe him but somehow I knew my life would be in turmoils from this moment on.
If only he knew the danger he was putting himself in...
