The silence that followed was unbearable. I wished someone would say something, or do something. My heart was on the verge of escaping through my mouth. I tried desperately to control my breathing but failed miserably.
Dimitri's eyes were fixed on Kevin, the gun steady and threatening in his hands.
My inability to move was uncomfortable as all my weight was balanced on one leg. I wanted to shift my weight to the other leg but moving even a nanometer could cause the knife to pierce my skin.
Then there was finally some movement.
Dimitri was slowly stepping backwards, his gun still aimed, his eyes still fixed on Kevin.
What was he doing?
He backed away until he was standing just in front of the opposite wall.
The blade got closer to my neck, so close that I felt a trickle of blood run down my throat. I closed my eyes in agony as tears formed in my eyes. I held my breath.
I jerked my eyes open at a loud, piercing sound that rang through the air. There was the soft sound of bullet to flesh, and before I knew what was happening, Kevin's hand fell from my throat. The knife fell from his hand and to the ground.
I sprang away from Kevin, then turned around to see blood flowing from his elbow. It ran down his hand and dripped onto the floor, forming a puddle. Kevin used his other hand to clutch his elbow in an attempt to stop the bleeding. It wasn't very effective, though, as the blood made its way through his fingers and wherever else it could.
My stomach turned as nausea kicked in.
Dimitri was moving at full speed towards him, his face set and determined, and filled with fury; his fist clenched.
He grasped him by the front of his shirt and followed him into the wall behind them, then started punching him wildly in the face.
My mouth dropped, and I stared wide eyed at him.
I couldn't take it.
"Dimitri! Stop!" I yelled. My throat was so dry and husky that I almost didn't recognize it.
Dimitri continued, as if I hadn't spoken. His fist pounded against Kevin's face, each punch filled with anger.
"Dimitri!"
He didn't stop.
I rushed over to him and grabbed hold of his hand before he could throw another punch, causing Kevin's unconscious body to fall to the floor.
I locked eyes with Dimitri. His hand relaxed.
"You could've killed him!" I yelled. "What's wrong with you?"
"I wanted to." He answered, his calm voice contradicting the quick rising and falling of his chest.
I was taken aback by his answer.
"He tried to hurt you," he continued. "I cannot and will not ever let anyone hurt you, OK? Whoever does that deserves to die!"
I didn't answer. Couldn't. His eyes showed so much concern, more than I've ever seen before.
I shifted my eyes from his and let go of his arm.
"Do you have your phone on you?" I asked him, mostly to change the subject. "I should call the police."
"And tell them what? And even if he gets arrested again he'll get out like before. It doesn't make much sense."
He was right. But we couldn't just leave him there. At least if he was put in jail we'd know where he was, even if only for a while.
