I tore my eyes away from Dimitri's and jumped to my feet as panic rushed through my body. Please, please, please don't be disconnected! I pleaded, as I rushed towards the door. I quickly opened it and stepped outside.
The street lights were still on and so were the lights in the houses I could see. Crap!
I knew this would happen eventually but I was really hoping it wouldn't happen anytime soon.
I sighed, then went back inside and locked the door.
I sat on the sofa and stared unseeingly through the darkness at the blank TV screen.
Why couldn't the JPS be more patient and understanding? What was I going to do? The NWC would be cutting off my water connection in no time and, even if I could possibly live without light, there was no way I could live without water.
"Are you ok?" I heard Dimitri ask.
I had forgotten he was here."Do I look ok?" I snapped.
"Whoa, calm down," he said. "You look quite upset that's why I asked."
"Sorry," I rose from the sofa. "You should go. I'm going to bed."
"Are you sure? I could stay the night if you want. Lots of scary stuff happen in the dark," he said with a smirk.
Was he seriously joking now? I wanted to choke him. "I'll be ok," I said instead. I walked over to the door and held it open.
He rose from the sofa and walked slowly towards the door, being careful not to bump into any furniture or break anything.
As he walked out the door he said, "don't say I didn't warn you," and walked away.
I rolled my eyes and locked the door. The house suddenly felt empty and the darkness was unbearable.
I went to my bedroom and got a candle, then I went to the kitchen and, using a match, I lit it and brought it back to my room. I placed it in the nightstand and went to bed.
I lay in bed, just staring at the ceiling. I think I dozed off for a while but I was soon awokened by a loud crash coming from somewhere in the house.
Startled, I jumped out of bed and, bringing the candle, rushed to the living room. Nothing seemed out of place. I went through the adjoining door and into the kitchen. Everything was how I left it. Scared, I went to the bathroom and looked around, same as I left it. The washroom was the same also.
I was sure I wasn't dreaming when I heard the sound. I dialled Flo's number on my phone and listened as it rang. Dang, voicemail. I was about to hang up when she answered.
"Hey,what's up?" She said.
"Hurry, come stay with me!" I said. "There was something in my house!"
She laughed so hard I was afraid she would literally die of laughter. "I'm serious! I just heard something," I told her.
"Are those cheese puffs finally getting to your head?" She asked. "Seriously you need to stop eating them."
"Whatever. You'll be so sorry when you hear my name on the news," I said.
"Go to sleep, Viv," she said. "Dream about me."
I rolled my eyes and hung up.
Did I just hear another sound coming from the bathroom? I went in there but, of course it was the same as before.
I knew it was just my mind playing tricks on me but I was scared nevertheless.
I went to the kitchen and took a large phonebook from under the counter, then ran as fast as the candle would allow back to my room with it.
I searched the pages swiftly with shaking hands. The number just had to be there!
I found it. I crossed my fingers and hoped that he didn't change it. It was ringing. He answered on the fourth ring.
"Hello," came his sweetly accented voice.
"Dimitri, there was someone in my house!" I barely whispered.
"Hello. I can't hear you."
"There was, or is, someone in my house!" I said again, but a little louder.
"Oh my God! I'm coming over, stay put!"
"Hurry!" I said and hung up.
A few seconds that felt like hours later, there was a loud knock on my door. I came out from my hiding place under the bed and ran to open it. Dimitri was standing there in pajamas, looking like I had woken him. He was so darn handsome!
"Are you ok?!" He asked with a worried expression as he came inside. I had never seen him this serious.
"Yea. Thanks for coming over." I locked the door and walked behind him with the candle as he looked everywhere.
"What happened?" He asked as we sat on the living room sofa.
I was a little embarrassed since I was now sure that I had imagined it. "I may have heard a sound coming from somewhere."
"May have?" He asked. "What exactly did you hear?"
"I may have imagined it," I said. "Maybe the darkness was getting to me. I'm fine now."
"Ok." He smiled.
"What?" I said.
"Nothing."
We looked at each other and for some reason we both burst into laughter. I laughed so hard I thought I was going to fall off the sofa. I couldn't stop.
When we finally stopped laughing, he said, " you know, I would love to have someone like you in Australia. You make me laugh without even trying."
"You make me laugh without even trying." I said, smiling. "How did you even get here so quickly?"
"How do you know it wasn't me that was in here," he said with a smirk.
Creepy as that sounded I couldn't stop laughing. He joined in eventually.
We talked some more, but mostly laughed. I wasn't sure when I fell asleep.
But when I woke I saw the sun shining in through the curtains. I felt strong arms wrapped around me and my body was pressed against hard muscles. I felt his warm, even breath on my neck, telling me he was still asleep. I was so comfortable, I wanted to stay like this forever.
Realization struck me and, in a flash, I rolled out of his arms and landed painfully on the floor.
