"Let's hang the pepper lights next," I told Dimitri. It was Christmas Eve and I was at his place helping him decorate. With Kevin in jail and my family back home safe and sound, I felt so free and energized.
With the help of Dimitri, I had done what I could to my house the previous day and I'd been helping Dimitri with his all day.
I was having so much fun my body forgot to be exhausted. I've always loved decorating.
"Ok," Dimitri answered.
He grabbed the pepper lights and we went outside.
"So where do we hang them?" He asked me.
"Everywhere."
I looked at the house from the front. There were plenty of places on which they could be attached.
"Do you have a ladder?" I asked him.
"Yea, in the garage. Why?"
"We need it to get the lights up. Go get it," I said.
He left and came back a few minutes later carrying a tall ladder, then placed it against the house. He stood at the base, ready to climb.
"What are you doing?" I asked him.
"I'll go up and you pass me the lights."
I laughed. "Get away from the ladder before you hurt yourself."
He smiled and stepped back a few paces.
"Ok, suit yourself," he said. "But don't call me when you fall off."
"Watevs." I walked up to the ladder, tested it, then started to climb.
Dimitri passed me the lights and I hung some high on the house while he hung some at the bottom.
We moved the ladder and hung the lights until the entire exterior of the house had lights.
When we were done with the house, we hung some in the trees and anywhere we could.
We had lunch when we were done then we continued working. We changed all that could be changed to something new and scrubbed the entire house, top to bottom.
I went home when we were done to take a shower and get some sleep. Though it was just about 5pm my eyes were beginning to feel heavy and I was feeling very tired.
I took a quick shower then got into bed and soon fell asleep.
I woke up about two hours later feeling drained. I looked at the clock. It was 6:44pm.
I crawled out of bed and went to the bathroom to wash my face. When I took up a towel to dry it, I heard a soft tap on my front door.
I dried my face then made my way to the door.
"Who is it?" I asked.
There was no answer.
I repeated the question but there was still no answer.
Deciding that it was just my imagination, I headed back to my room.
I was hardly at the door when I saw something lying on my pillow. As I got closer I realized that it was a piece of paper.
Was that always there?
I walked over to the bed and picked it up.
It was a small piece of paper torn from some kind of book. It was blank except for the few words that were written in the centre.
