I sat on the sofa in Dimitri's living room and stared into empty space. I still couldn't believe what the officer had said.So Kevin is dead.Wow.
Dimitri walked into the room carrying two glasses and a bottle.
"You look like you could use some wine," he said, handing me a glass.
I took it and he poured in some wine, then poured some into his glass and sat beside me on the sofa.
"Are you ok?" He asked me.
I nodded as I took a sip of wine.
"Are you sure? You just found out your ex husband is dead and now you don't know who's after you or why and that chip that you've been protecting for so long is now completely useless and your family is in a safe house waiting for something to happen and-"
"Gee, thanks," I said sarcastically. "I feel so much better now."
"Sorry," he said, taking a sip of wine.
I sighed. "I'm going back to my house today," I said, changing the subject. "I'm going to clean up and start decorating."
He frowned. "Why? You can stay here until this is all over."
"It doesn't make any sense to stay here," I said. "Whoever it is already knows I'm here."
He sighed. "Do you have any idea who it might be?"
I shook my head. "No."
"Do you have any other enemies?"
"No."
"Are you sure?" He said. "Think about it. That person may be closer to you than you think, maybe a friend or relative."
"My relatives are all nice people," I said. "They don't go around trashing places and breaking windows. And my friends don't have anything against me."
"How do you know that?"
"I just do," I said.
"What about your friend, Flo? Does she have anything against you?"
I shot him a disbelieving look.
"Keep Flo out of this," I snapped. "If there is one person here that I trust it's her so don't you dare accuse her of anything."
"Ok," he sighed.
I took another sip of wine and stared thoughtfully into space.
Who could it be?
Something suddenly occurred to me and I looked at Dimitri.
"What about you?" I asked him.
"What?" He said.
"Do you have any enemies?"
He smiled. "I have tonnes of enemies," he said. "But none that is patient enough to trash your place before getting to me."
"Maybe it's just some random person," I said. "He could've been searching for money or something."
He shook his head. "No. It was someone you know."
We sat there for hours, drinking wine and talking about who might've done it.
I looked at my watch. 5:30pm. I rose from my seat.
"I should get home now," I said. "I have a lot of cleaning up to do."
He rose also. "Are you sure you have to leave? You could stay here for as long as you want."
I nodded.
He walked me to the front door.
"See you tomorrow," I said as I began walking towards my house.
"Wait," he said and I stopped and turned around. He was closing the door behind him.
"Let me walk you to your house," he said, catching up with me.
We walked in silence over to my house. When we got there I opened the front door and stepped in. I was greeted with the same mess as before.
"You'll need help to clean all this up," Dimitri said behind me. "Mind if I help you?"
I knew he was just trying to keep an eye on me but I really could use his help.
"Ok," I said with a shrug. "Let's gather all the broken glass."
We got right into it. We carefully gathered all the glass and put them on a heap, then I got a plastic container and we piled them into it.
We then upturned all the furniture and swept the floor.
When we were done sweeping, I replaced all the stuffing in the cushions and pillows, then I sewed the torn mattresses.
While I was doing this, Dimitri repaired the broken furniture.
I packed all the drawers and dusted the furniture.
We then did a final straightening up, then swept and mopped the floor.
The house was almost good as new when we were done.
I dropped myself onto the sofa in exhaustion. Dimitri sat beside me. I looked at my watch. It was 12:13am. I had no idea it was that late.
"I'm going to go take a shower," I told Dimitri as I got up.
He nodded. "Would you like me to get you something to eat?" He asked me.
I shook my head. "I'm fine," I said. "I'm going to bed soon, anyways."
I went to the bathroom and took a quick shower, then went to my room and put on PJ's.
I was about to go to bed when I remembered Dimitri. I went back to the living room.
He was lying on the sofa in PJ's and tapping away on his phone. I gave him a questioning look as he looked up from his phone.
"I went home and took a shower," he answered my unasked question. "I also ordered pizza." He got up off the sofa and went through the adjoining door and into the kitchen, then returned with a box of pizza, a bottle of coke, and two cups.
I sat on the sofa and he sat on the opposite side, placing the pizza between us, and placing the bottle and cups on the coffee table.
We both took a slice of pizza and I poured some coke into both cups.
We ate in silence. When were were almost done there was a hard rap on my door.
Who could be knocking on my door at almost one in the morning?
Dimitri and I exchanged a confused look as I got up from the sofa and walked towards the door.
"Who is it?" I asked.
The knocking became more persistent as I heard a familiar voice say, "open the door, Vivica, and don't make me break it down!"
I froze halfway to the door. My mind was struggling to process this new information.
"Don't open it!" Dimitri was saying, but his voice was stuck in my subconscious and I made my way to the door.
I heard him coming up behind me. "Vivica, don't!"
I hurried toward the door, Dimitri moving behind me.
With a trembling hand, I unlocked the door and pulled it open. I stared blankly at the person on the other end.
"Kevin?" I barely whispered.
