Don't Listen To The Haters

Y/N

Derek always knew how to make you feel special; he always had the right words to make you feel good about yourself and your body. When people said dating a singer would be hard work you didn't think it could really be that hard, but you were wrong. State Champs were currently doing great and their fan base was still growing, Derek loved the fans and always stopped to take pictures and sign things on the street. It was okay for him because all these young girls loved him, but you, on the other hand, didn't exactly get the same treatment. The fanbase was split 50/50 down the middle about whether or not they loved or loathed you. You tried to only listen to the positive fans but you soon found yourself swimming in a sea of hate.

Derek always told you to never listen to the haters because they were just jealous that you had landed an awesome and handsome boyfriend like himself. And to prove that he was an awesome boyfriend Derek was taking you out for a meal at your favourite Italian place. You didn't get too dressed up because the restaurant was like a second home to you because your family knew the owners. You wore your nicest Vans, a pair of black skinny jeans, a Babymetal tank and an oversized black and red plaid shirt thrown over the top that used to be Derek's until you 'borrowed' it. You did a simple winged eyeliner and light pink lips and threw on one of your many beanies.

"Wow my girl looks hot tonight, I better watch out for guys trying to steal you away from me y/n."

You blush as Derek pulls you in for a kiss at the front door. He was wearing his usual get up; you were one of those couples that preferred comfort over showing off.

"I could say the same about you Derek, but instead of beating guys off with a stick I'll be beating girls away from you."

Derek laughs, he thought you were joking but it was a daily battle keeping other girls from sinking their claws into him.

~ Restaurant ~

You and Derek were seated in one of the booths at the back away from the other customers. As soon as you stepped inside your eyes trained in on a group of girls who couldn't be older than 18 pointing and checking out Derek. Your suspicions were confirmed when you heard one of them mention the band's name, you just hoped they didn't ruin your date night.

"I love simple dates like this Derek."

Derek smiles over the top of his menu and his hand finds yours across the table and squeezes it lightly.

"I love that you love simple dates y/n. Normal girls would expect me to splash the cash but I don't think money makes a good time, it's the company that makes the good time and I couldn't ask for anyone better than you babe."

"Give me takeout, Netflix and cuddles over a loud club and getting wasted."

The waiter comes over and takes your orders. Unlike most girls who would have ordered a salad, you had gone for a meat feast pizza all for yourself while Derek ordered another pizza, the two of you also ordered garlic bread and curly fries because you were pigs at heart.

"I also love that you're not afraid to eat in front of me y/n. But I bet you won't finish that whole pizza to yourself, you never can."

You scoff and slap his hand playfully.

"Oh just you watch me DiScanio, tonight I'll prove you wrong."

"Err excuse me I hope we're not interrupting but we're big fans Derek and would love to get a picture with you and something signed. It's not every day we get to meet our idol. What are you doing here?"

The voice belongs to one of the four girls you noticed earlier. It was only now that they were stood at your table that you saw just how beautiful they were. They were skinnier than you and had actually made an effort, they had a face full of makeup and perfectly curled or straightened hair and they were dressed in skirts and dresses that actually showed off their bodies unlike you who had hidden yours away. You suddenly feel yourself becoming insecure in their presence.

"I'm here enjoying a date night with my girlfriend y/n but I'd happily take a picture or two."

Josh beams the girls a smile. One of them scans you up and down with condescending eyes before smirking.

"Why are you with that Derek? I mean she doesn't even dress as a girl should. You deserve someone more beautiful."

You tense in your seat and notice Derek's expression darkened slightly. Three of the girls notice and tug on their friend to get her attention.

"Karen shut up will you? Derek is getting mad."

Even if the other three hated you, you were happy they kept their opinions to themselves instead of voicing them.

"I happen to think y/n is very beautiful and I love her dress sense. She makes me happy and I don't like fans who are mean to her for their own gain. Now the three of you can have a picture but you Karen don't deserve one."

Karen looks taken aback as were you by Derek's sudden outburst. You knew he always defended you but never like this in such a public place. You sat in your seat as Derek turned back into Mr nice guy and took pictures with the other three girls and signed things. Karen dragged her three friends away from the table just as the food arrived.

However as you looked down at the mountain of food in front of you, you couldn't help but think back to the comment. If you ate all this then you were fat and Derek didn't need a fat girlfriend. Derek notices you aren't eating and takes your hand in his once more with a concerned expression on his face.

"Don't ever think you're not beautiful or perfect y/n because you are. Now let's eat this and then we'll go back home and cuddle on the sofa."

You nod and squeeze his hand back before letting out the breath you'd been holding.

"Thank god because I'm starving."

Derek laughs and the two of you enjoy the rest of your meal in peace. No matter how many fans hated you, you needed to remember Derek's advice 'don't listen to the haters'.
