Camping Blues

SALEM

How the hell the guys from Motionless In White had persuaded me of all people to go camping with them I'd never know. Yes, I liked the outdoors, but camping wasn't my favourite pastime. I was only really going because Ryan would be there, yes shoot me I was in love with one of my best friends but I couldn't help it. Ryan was kind and sweet and we always had a laugh around each other, I just didn't know if he liked me back.

RYAN

I'd been looking forward to this camping trip for a while now, but after what I'd just found out I wasn't looking forward to being stuck on a campsite with the girl I had a crush on and the rest of my band. I found out that the rest of the band have crushes on Salem, whether big or small they'd each admitted it to me though I wasn't quite sure everyone else knew the whole band was in love with the same girl.

Salem was a one of a kind girl; she didn't care for girly things and preferred playing pranks and watching scary movies. Almost all of her whole body was tattooed, each design fitted with each other to tell a story and she had multiple piercings that would put off most guys but drew me to her.

"Hi Ryan, are you looking forward to this trip?"

Salem hops into the backseat since Chris had taken the front seat leaving her wedged in between Ricky and Josh, while Devin and Vinny were behind them in the van. I grunt but don't respond to her question, as in the mirror I see Josh reading her palm which meant he was a bit too close for my liking.

"Ignore him Salem, he's on his man period."

I clench the steering wheel as Ricky cracks the joke and everyone bursts into laughter. This trip was going to be hell.

I volunteered to gather wood and Vinny tagged along while the others set up camp. I had to get out of there because even if Salem didn't know that she had all the guys eating out of her lap it annoyed me that she was paying more attention to them than me.

"I know I'm new to the band Ryan, but it's pretty obvious that something's on your mind and it involves Salem because it's not like you to give her the cold shoulder."

Vinny was a lot smarter than people gave him credit for, just because he was younger didn't mean he couldn't read situations. I kick some nearby leaves before leaning against a nearby tree.

"Salem is my best friend and has been since high school. I introduced her to the guys and they got on like a house on fire and now I find out that each of them has a crush on her. I've been in love with her since high school and now I have to compete with the guys."

Vinny sighs, "It's clear that she's in love with you to Ryan, I mean the other week when we went out for coffee she kept telling me stories about you, more so than the rest of the band."

I glance up at Vinny to see if he was lying, but butter wouldn't melt on Vinny because he was an innocent bean who saw the good in everyone. Did Salem really spend their whole coffee date talking about me? If she did then I'd been a dick to her today and possibly driven her into the arms of another band member.

SALEM

Ryan had been giving me the cold shoulder ever since he picked me up and I didn't know what I'd done to deserve it. I'd never seen this jerky side of him before, maybe I was so blinded by love that I hadn't taken the time to get to know the real Ryan. As I put up my tent Ricky came over to help me and I couldn't help but think something was off with the rest of the band. Ricky was a lot more jokey and touchy-feely, and the second I got bored of putting my tent up all the guys leapt at the opportunity to help me.

I liked the guys, but only as friends. I volunteer to grab the beer from the car but before I get back to the campsite I overhear the last thing I expected to hear. Chris, Ricky, Devin and Josh were sat around the now lit fire talking in not quite hushed whispers.

"It's obvious you have a crush on her Josh, I mean could you be any more obvious with the palm reading in the car."

Josh snorts, "You were getting pretty touchy-feely by the tent Ricky, do you have something to confess?"

Chris stands up and puts himself in between Josh and Ricky. "So we all have a crush on Salem and Ryan knows."

Well, that explained the cold shoulder Ryan was giving me, even in high school he never thought he was good enough to be my friend. It was clear now that he didn't think he could compete with his friends, so he went into his shell again.

As if on cue Ryan and Vinny walk out of the woods carrying more wood to keep the fire burning all night, they'd been gone a while so Devin and Chris gathered some wood from nearby. It was now or never.

"Ryan, I know."

Ryan's head snaps in my direction and he jumps slightly dropping the wood in his hand.

"You know what Salem."

I motion towards the campsite where the guys were arguing about me, Ryan makes an 'oh' shape with his mouth while Vinny grins next to him and nudges him in the ribs.

"Take a leap of faith Ryan, now I need to get this wood to the guys."

Vinny whistles and walks past the two of us. Ryan shuffles on the spot nervously, it looked like I was going to have to make the first move.

"Screw this Ryan; I'm going to do something I've wanted to do since high school."

I close the space between us and cup his chin roughly before smashing my lips down on his, he jumps slightly but soon gets into the kiss. After a couple of minutes, he pulls back grinning.

"I'm sorry for giving you the cold shoulder earlier; I didn't think I could compete with the guys."

I throw my head back and laugh, "I forgive you, Ryan. Will you be my boyfriend?"

He nods, "Only if you'll be my girlfriend Salem."

I lean back in and kiss him again; this camping trip had just gotten better.
