It was late through the night when Kanan had finished telling Hera everything he knew from Ezra, who told Kanan everything he knew from Sabine herself.
Hera didn't believe him at first, she was in denial for the majority of his explanation. It was not until Kanan had almost broken down, a man who was trained to control his feelings as a Jedi, did the words begin to sink into her. When Kanan was done speaking, they both just looked at their feet in silence. The only thing they could hear was the thumping sounds of their heartbeat.
"No...that can't be..." Hera whispered. "Kanan, if this is a joke...please just tell me now".
Kanan rubbed the knuckles of his hands, his unmoving eyes not removing focus from his feet.
"I really, really wished I could tell you I'm joking". Kanan looked at her and she at him. His expression told her just how true his words were.
"Oh gosh, Sabine..." Hera quietly broke down and Kanan went to her side. He put his arm around her and they both grieved together, throughout the night. They wouldn't be getting much sleep.
Sabine was more than a very good friend and comrade to them, she was almost like their daughter just as Ezra was becoming like Kanan's son.
"Zeb and Chopper still don't know. I'm going to enlighten them in the morning...and then Sabine will have to confront us with her fears". Kanan announced to Hera.
Sabine was unable to sleep, she was incredibly uncomfortable. Her mind was constantly on the events that took place before and on the kind of person she was becoming. She was not the same, she was no longer sassy or funny...she was just...mature, more so than she already was. She wanted to be herself again, to actually be who she was without pretending.
It's too late, the damage has already been done. I'll not be able to go back.
Her heart thumped when she thought about whether it was the end of her artistic ways too, is she going to think she's too old for that? She could already just picture herself scrubbing the colourful look off her Mandolorian armour in favour of the dull grey it used to be. She could see herself washing her hair to remove the blue and orange that she had dyed it with and return it to its natural brown. And her room? Was she going to wash all her work off the walls too?
No...please no...
She sat up from her bed. Her sweat stuck her skin to her tank-top and shorts. She got out of her bed and the cold sense of the floor met her naked feet.
I'll take my sketchbook, go into the Galley and work all through the night. When the others wake up, I'll show them. I'll show them all there's nothing wrong with me. Or at least in Ezra's case...recovered.
She grabbed her new sketchbook, her colouring tools and opened the door of her room. Her footsteps were quiet against the metal floor. She could see the Bridge had its lights on, inside she could see Hera and Kanan. Their backs were turned to her and they seemed to be having a moment together.
D'aw that cute.
She walked down to the Lounge and flicked through her clean sketchbook. When she looked towards the table to sit, she could see a shadowy figure sitting there already. They had paper on the table and were scribbling something. Upon further inspection and pupil-adjustment, she identified the figure as Ezra.
"Ezra? What are you doing up this late?" Sabine whispered to him.
Ezra raised his eyes from the table and looked at her. His heart gave a thump.
"What are you doing up this late?" He asked in return.
Sabine shrugged and sat to his right.
Touché.
She looked at the paper in front of Ezra, he had made a cringeworthy attempt to draw the symbol of Rebellion against the Empire. It looked so unsymmetrical and the colours were dodgy.
She gave a short chuckle and smiled at him.
"I didn't inspire you to became an artist did I?" She said as she laid her sketchbook in front of her and flicked to the first empty page.
"Wanna lesson on art? I've got nothing else to do". Sabine offered to him as she took out one of the orange pencils that Ezra had next to him. It was one of her older pencils, Ezra probably thought she didn't need it with the new stuff she got.
Ezra shrugged and nodded to her.
"I don't think anyone has anything better to do right now". Ezra was willing to do anything to keep the Mandolorian's mind off The Inquisitor. He felt particularly guilty about having told Kanan about Sabine, but he trusted it was for the best.
Sabine moved the sketchbook in front of Ezra, took the pencil and placed it in his hand.
"Alright, my padawan" She said with a big smile. "Heed my advice and maybe you'll become one with the paintbrush!"
Sabine's attempts to blend her knowledge of art with Kanan's lessons of the Force were hilarious. Ezra listened to her words as he re-attempted the Rebel insignia. It didn't look much better.
"This really isn't easy". Ezra said with a sigh.
Sabine put her left arm over his shoulder and her right hand over his.
"Sometimes it helps to know how it feels to draw...in the hands of a master". She told him as she began to continue Ezra's drawing as she guided his hand using her own. Anything that Ezra managed to make look ugly, she made beautiful. When they were finished with the drawings outlines, Sabine began to add colour.
"Orange and blue are one of my favourite combinations, the contrast just looks...mwah". She imitated a sound one would associate with blowing a kiss.
As Sabine drew, she was reminded why she loved art so much. Everything she did was a reflection of herself, a way to express herself. The cold feelings deep inside her began to melt as she drew with whom she considered a younger brother. But despite that...she did somewhat think of him as someone she was romantically interested in. Despite Sabine always acting like she was significantly older, the truth was she was only a year older.
Puberty hit me harder.
