Name: Slate Welby
District: 2
Age: 15
Gender: Female
Weapon: Slate's weapon is her wits. She is incredibly smart and very good at planning and strategy. As a wise woman once told her, "not planning is planning to fail."
Appearance: Slate has coal black hair and is average height. She never puts her hair up unless she is told to. Her hair mostly hangs straight down her back and sometimes hides her face. Her eyes are misty blue. Her bright smile is a rare sight, and those who see it feel privileged.
Personality: Slate is an actress; she acts however people want her to. She meets everyone's high standards, only to make them higher. For her parents, she is the best daughter a peacekeeper could have. For her friends, she pretends to laugh at their jokes, have fun and be strong. But when she is alone she is true to herself. She lets herself cry only when no one can hear her; she lets herself hope only when no one can see the determination in her eyes.
Strengths: Slate doubts herself, which often makes her work foolproof. She is also terribly strong, having trained for the Hunger Games. She is skilled with a spear.
Weakness: Sometimes doubting herself is a good thing, but it also becomes her weakness. She is very hard on herself, yet does not give herself enough credit. She has never been good at close combat and can't use a dagger. She always judges people, thinking they just want something out of her, leaving her guarded. She also has quite a temper sometimes, scaring others away.
Backstory: Slate used to have four siblings. Now she has three. The eldest volunteered for the Hunger Games because she thought she could win. After five days in the arena, she met her death; the person who killed her was from her own district. This is a forbidden topic with the Welby family because they were humiliated. If Slate does not win, her name will be forbidden as well. Slate did not mean to volunteer; it just sort of happened. She was thinking about her sister, almost in a trance, when she yelled, "I volunteer!" Now she is stuck here. But it is good that she volunteered. If she hadn't, she would be at home being punished, knowing she ruined the family name, even though she really couldn't care less about the family name.
Token: Slate's token is a simple silver necklace with a charm that bears her name. It will remind her of who is actually is, versus who other people think she is.
