Colin
Knox was still crying into his shoulder as they waited in the waiting room. They've been there for a while; hopeless.
"Listen to me okay? You have to calm down before you make yourself sick alright? You did good. You called me and we got mommy to the hospital. She's going to be fine."
"I should have helped her. I shouldn't have hid."
"Knowing mommy, she wanted you to hide. She wanted you to be safe. Just calm down okay?" He brushed the tears from his cheeks. "I'm glad you're okay. I don't know what I would do if you got hurt." He sniffled.
"I just want her to be okay."
"Me too."
***********
-The next morning-
He hasn't slept all night.
There hasn't been any word. The doctors haven't come out. People have been calling but he hasn't had anything to tell them. He's scared out of his mind and angry as hell. He's trying his hardest to balance the two out but one is slowly starting to win.
So, after his pacing fit he sort of plopped down in his seat again. Knox was sort of laid out in one of the big chairs; asleep. He leaned forward and put his hands over his face.
"Morgan Kaepernick?"
He looked up to find a nurse looking seriously at him. She was an older brown woman with shoulder length black hair and light brown eyes. He stood up.
"Yes?"
"Your wife is in pretty bad shape. She has three broken ribs, a broken arm, and not to mention bruises all over her body."
"Is she...is she awake?" The woman frowned.
"No. She's been unconscious this entire time. We're waiting for her CT scans to come back so we can see what head trauma there is."
Oh God.
"Can we see her?"
"She's in the intensive care unit, a separate room sectioned off. I can take you."
He grabbed Knox up into his arms before they started what felt like the longest walk he'd ever taken. He didn't know how she looked now; how he'd feel seeing her, how Knox would react to the scene? So many different questions running through his mind. He barely even paid attention most of the way to her room.
"Just in here." The nurse pushes open the door and gestures for him to go in first.
He's almost reluctant to walk in but he does, slowly, to find one of the most heartbreaking scenes he's ever witnessed. His body feels like it might collapse, his feet feel like weights and his racing thoughts stop completely. Everything feels like it's at a standstill.
When he had found them in the parking lot everything was fairly new. There wasn't any time to look over her and take stock of her injuries. But seeing her now put everything into perspective. He could see every scratch and bruise.
He laid Knox back down on a couch before moving over to the side of her bed. The nurse was checking her over gently as he watched on quietly.
Oh how he wished she was awake.
"Why does she have a neck brace?"
"It looked like whoever hurt her tried to suffocate her. She has severe bruising on her neck. Her tracheal is severely damaged. We won't know much until she wakes up."
"Besides the obvious...is everything okay?"
"Everything is fairly normal; her vitals are looking good. Just press the button if you need anything."
"Thank you." She nodded before leaving. He hated the sound of the monitor; though he knew it was just telling him that the love of his life was alive: it still made him anxious.
He moved a chair to her side and sat down; all the while still staring at her face.
She looked so helpless.
From her black eye to her busted lip, her neck brace to her broken arm in a sling. He could only imagine what her stomach and her legs looked like. He was scared to touch her for fear that he might hurt her even more; though his hand practically ached to hold hers.
He was going to kill whoever did this to her; whoever scared Knox to the point that he shook. He would find out soon but-
There was a knock at the door and he turned to see two police officers standing at the doorway.
"Mr.Kaepernick?"
"Yes?"
"We're from the county police department. I'm officer Konaley and this is Officer Baker. We were wondering if we could ask you a few questions about your wife."
"Yeah sure."
With one last worry glance he got up and moved out the door with both officers. They greet each other before officer Konaley takes out a notepad and pen."Do you know what happened to your wife exactly?"
"No...my son called me and told me where they were. All I know is that there is more than one person that did this."
"You said your son called you, how old is he?"
"Three."
"A three year old....called you? On your wife's phone?"
"He's a smart kid. We teach our kids what to do in emergency situations so they're ready just in case. He knows my number, my wife's, and 911."
"Alright...and how many children do you have?"
"Two. My daughter is at home with her aunt."
"Okay. Now where were you before your son called you?"
Stupid.
"Home. My wife was supposed to meet me there after my football game. I got worried when she didnt."
"Where did you find her?"
"In the parking lot of the Levi stadium. She wasn't too far from her car."
"Alright...we might need to ask your son a few questions. Ask him what he saw..."
"He's sleeping. All of this....he's had a long night and I'd rather let him rest."
"Fine. We'll come back later. We'll tell you if we find anything." They shook his hand before leaving him alone in the hallway.
Typical. Of course they thought he did it.
His phone buzzed in his pocket and he groaned. He didn't want to answer the phone or talk to anyone; he just wanted to be where he needed to be.
"Hello?"
"What's going on? Any word yet?" Sammie.
"A lot. Probably a lot we didn't want to hear..."
