I made my way downstairs almost tripping over my snuggie that I had left on the ground the night before. I open the fridge door and then the pantry door and look for something to eat. Of course there is nothing. I wrote a note to my mother on a post it note telling her to go to the store then grab two slices of beef and mushroom pizza from the fridge. Beef and mushroom is my dad’s favorite kind of pizza. I throw the slices on a paper towel and sling my new bookbag over my right shoulder. I pile all of my stuff in the front seat of my old pickup truck and start the engine. The truck used to be my brothers before he went off to college. I take one more look at myself in the mirror and start pulling out of the garage. This is the first time I am driving myself to this school so I woke up a bit earlier to avoid first day of school traffic. I arrive at school fifteen minutes early so I decide to sit in my car and eat my cold pizza. After my delicious breakfast I look in the mirror to make sure I don’t have any food in my teeth. I apply a fresh coat of pink tinted lip gloss and gather up my stuff. I pull my schedule out and note my first period class. At my new school apparently there is an extra homeroom time added to first period. I have Mr. Marks for math first period. I toss my long dark brown hair over my shoulder and enter the building. By now there are a good number of students in the hallway and I make my way over to my locker. Number 376, after a few tries I am successful in opening my locker. I organize a few of my things such as binders and locker decorations and all that good stuff. Just as I am finishing up my masterpiece a boy with blondish brown hair walks up to me and starts opening the locker above me. “Sorry” I mumble as I try to move my stuff out of his way. “Nah, you’re all good” he says glancing down at me. Then he looks back. “Are you new here?” he asks eyeing me. “Yes I am actually” I say trying to get a good impression of him. “I’m Michael” he says as I stand up. I’m pretty short so there is a pretty good height difference. I take a step back in order to look at him comfortably. “I’m Kaylee” I say extending my hand to him. The look on his face tells me that he isn’t the handshaking type, but he shakes my hand anyway. “So where did you come from?” he asks as his face returns to his locker. “I came here from Atlanta, Georgia. My parents moved the whole family out here to start up a business.” I say to the back of his head. It feels a bit awkward and also more relaxed. “Cool. So what do you have first?” he asks as he shuts his locker and turns to face me. “Math with Mr. Marks” I say as I pull my schedule out of my back pocket. “Hey Calum has got that class too.” He says as he reaches for my schedule. “Hey Calum come here for a sec” he calls across the hallway. A boy in a beanie comes strutting down the hall. “Hey Michael I guess you decided to show up to the first day after all” he says as he approaches. They exchange some kind of secret handshake and then Michael gestures towards me. “This is Kaylee. She has math with you first period.” He says as I pick up my stuff. “Cool. Cool. I’m Calum.” The dark haired boy says to me as he raises a hand in a wave like way. The bell rings and the students scramble off to their classes. Michael waves and dashes down the hall. Calum motions for me to follow him and he leads me straight into first period math.
