Gotta Get Out (a five seconds of summer story)

Chapter 32

I check my phone. One missed call from Grace. I dial her up and she answers. “Kaylee” she says answering her phone. “Yeah sorry I missed your call. Luke and Calum and I were ice skating.” I say explaining why I didn’t get her call. “Kaylee guess what! Michael asked me to be his girlfriend!!!!!!!” She says practically blowing out my eardrum. “Oh my gosh!!!!! You guys are so cute!!! How did he ask you?” I practically scream into the phone. “Okay well you know how we hung out today. Well he took me to the park and we were just hanging out when I said that I was hungry. He told me that he was too and that he had some snacks in the car and that he would go run and grab them. So when he came back he had just about all my favorite food, a blanket, and his guitar. Then he played me a cover of Boyfriend ending it by saying ‘I’d like to be your boyfriend; will you be my girlfriend?’ then I said yes then he gave me this really cool bracelet” She explained excitedly. “That is so cute! I can’t wait to see the cute couple at school, and the charm bracelet!” I say walking up to my room. “You would absolutely adore it Kay! It is super gorgeous! I would text you a picture, but I want to watch your face as you look at it.” She says sort of teasingly. “Well I can’t wait!” I say looking down at my clothes. I never gave Luke his sweatshirt back. “Hey so enough about me, what is up with you these days?” Grace asks me. “Nothing much. I just got my cast off so now I can have fun again” I say changing out of my clothes. “Oh yeah, hey I was wondering if you wanted to go to this thing with me. I was going to take Michael, but he has a family thing. We are having this birthday party for my grandmother and I wanted to see if you wanted to come.” She says into the phone. “Um isn’t your grandmother in a better place?” I say confused. “Yeah she is. My grandfather throws this birthday party for her every year in her memory. The whole family comes out for a big barbecue picnic thing.” She explains. “I’m in. When is it?” I ask turning on the shower. “Saturday” she says and I can tell that she is glad I’m coming. “Cool! Well I will see you tomorrow at school. I have to go shower.” I say testing the warmth of the water with my hand. “Okay great! Bye!” She chirps before hanging up. I step in the shower and enjoy finally being able to wash my leg.

          The next morning I put on my tribal black and white shorts and my light pink strapless bow top. I curl my hair and put on some pinky, flirty, girly makeup and gather up my stuff. I text Luke reminding him not to pick me up for school before getting my chocolate chip waffles out of the toaster oven. I pile into my truck and I get excited to drive again. I drive to school and park in my parking spot and make my way to my locker. “Hey Michael, I heard about you and Grace. Congratulations!” I say seeing Michael. “Thanks. Did she tell you how I asked her?” he asked. “Yes she did. She was pretty excited too so you did a good job.” I say patting him on the shoulder. He smiles up at me then makes his way to class. Having Michael, Luke, and Calum around was kind of like having brothers. They were always there for me, sometimes got on my nerves, and they understood me almost better than I understood myself. They made me think of Andrew, my brother. I really missed him and I wonder why he never calls or even texts me back. Class speeds by for the first half of the day and I am enjoying being able to walk around without my cast. “Hey, check out the charm bracelet!” Grace says to me at lunch dangling her wrist out in front of me. “Hold still!” I say grabbing her arm. It was silver and dainty with one little locket charm on it. “It only has one charm now. He says that as our relationship grows we can add more charms for different things. This first one symbolizes him making me his girlfriend.” She explains while fingering with the bracelet. She has had plenty of boyfriends before, but from what I have heard they were all kind of losers so I’m glad that she finally has a keeper. “Name your daughter Kaylee after me okay.” I say jokingly. “Now I don’t know about that, but you can totally be the godmother.” She says as the boys join us at the table. “Oh yeah there was something I have been meaning to tell you. I moved up to the next yoga class. You have been out for a while so it might take you a while to get back into it before you can move up also.” Grace says while stealing Calum’s pudding cup. “Hey!” Calum yells at her. She just smiles, opens the lid and takes out a huge spoonful before returning it to him. “Michael your girlfriend just stole my pudding!” Calum whines to Michael. “What are you telling me for?” Michael says not wanting to get involved. Calum makes a face and drops the issue. The school day drags on and I finally remember to give Luke his jacket back.
