Gotta Get Out (a five seconds of summer story)

Chapter 16

I arrive at home and decide to take a long hot shower. My mind replays my visit to Luke’s house over and over again. I had been friend zoned so many times in my life and now I am the one doing it to Luke. He was freaking perfect! I hated friend zoning him like that because I knew what it felt like being on the other end. I really want to call Grace and vent/sort it all out to her but Luke and I agreed to keep it to ourselves. Would this change things between us? Was he just lying about not feeling a spark just to make it less awkward? What if he actually likes me? What if I start to like him? My mind is in serious overdrive trying to figure all this out. Prepare for some strange dreams tonight. I hop out of the shower and check my phone. One missed call from Grace. I throw on some pajamas and call her back. “Hey Kaylee” she chimes answering the phone. “Hey Gracie, sorry I missed your call. I was in the shower.” I say looking at myself in the mirror. “That’s alright. There has been something I have been wanting to talk to you about.” She says sounding more serious. “Here let me put you on speaker. I’m alone so we are all good.” I say putting the phone on speaker and setting it down on my vanity. “Well you know how you introduced me to your friends the other day at lunch.” She starts. “Yeah…” I say brushing through my tangled hair. “Well you know Michael and how I said that I knew him” she continued. Then I remembered that I was going to call her about this and never did. “Yeah…” I say urging her to continue. “Well back last year we used to talk. Like not the kind of regular classmate talk. We were let’s say flirty friends. I really liked him and I think he liked me too, but when summer rolled around we kind of stopped talking.” She says finally spilling the story. “So that’s why both of you were giving off strange vibes.” I say as I finally know what happened. “Did he say anything about me?” she asks quickly. I start removing the excess makeup that didn’t wash off in the shower. “Well I mentioned you and he just acted a little weird that’s all” I say hoping to calm her nerves. “Well do you think he might still like me because I am still kind of hung up on him?” she asks through the phone. “I’m not really sure. How about you sit with us at lunch tomorrow? Then you could feel out the situation for yourself.” I suggest. “Yeah okay that sounds good. Thanks Kay you are always good to talk to” she says sounding relieved. Now would be the perfect opportunity to tell her about Luke, but I can’t do that to him. “Well I have to go. See you tomorrow.” I say ending the conversation. “Okay see you then” she replies. “Wear something cute” I say last minute into the phone before I hang up.
