One month later everything seemed to be getting back in place. There was less drama and Mason, Jessie and I stopped holding a grudge against Peyton for being with Zack. Those two were still going strong though, she had even brought him over a few times.
I have to admit it; Zack is a really great guy. And he did pretty good for himself by being a great architect. He had actually participated on the making of our apartment, which was pretty cool. He really liked Peyton too, he looked at her with such adoring eyes. Drew, however, would only glare at him whenever they came close. He still wasn’t over Peyton, it was obvious. He would still leap at any chance he got to spend time with her. He’d always start conversations with her and he would always look at her with the same I’m-So-In-Love-With-You eyes.
Besides that, everything was great. The tree house was done, meaning there were no longer any screaming kids inside the building. They were always outside in the tree house, their laughter filling everyone’s ears.
My group of friends never got to try out the tree house though since the kids were always in it. So we decided that tonight would be the night that we’d go in the tree house alone for the first time.
Ten o’clock had just hit and we were ready. We brought a few bags of chips with us and then we made our way towards the tree house. We all climbed the steps and we then sat in a circle, placing all of our chips in the middle.
“So, what do we do now?” Harlow wondered as she took a chip from the bag of Doritos.
“How about spin the bottle?” Jonah suggested, taking a water bottle from his pocket.
“There are six girls and three guys,” McKinley pointed out.
“Oh yeah, more for us,” Mason joked, blowing a kiss towards McKinley, who gagged dramatically in response.
I looked around the tree house and grinned. “Wow, the kids actually made it look better than it was in the first place.” They really did, they had put sticky notes with their names on them underneath a sign that said ‘The Cool Club Members’. There were around twelve names, three of which I recognized, Mandy, Gabby and Tommy. They had also put lanterns up, which of course didn’t work since there was no electricity in the house made of only wood.
I was imagining how cool it would be if they did work. It would make everything so much brighter. However, they already had done a good job at making the place colorful by putting bright paint splotches everywhere, making it look very fun and modern.
“Did you see that?!” Peyton asked very loudly, interrupting my thoughts. She was pointing at a bush with wide eyes.
“What about it?” Maven wondered, squinting so she could see better.
We all looked at where she was looking; narrowing our eyes to see what she was so excited about. And just then we saw it, a flicker of light. And then another.
“Fireflies!” Jessie exclaimed.
We all looked at each other and burst out in laughter, remembering the day where we sang the song Fireflies. Peyton brought the memory back by singing the song’s chorus. “I’d like to make myself believe, that planet earth turns slowly!”
I then looked up at the lanterns and grinned. “I just got the best idea,” I told everyone.
“What is it?” Harlow asked.
“What if we caught some of the fireflies and put them in jars and hung them with string in the tree house for the kids? It would be like lanterns, but they would really work!” I explained.
