My eyes fluttered open and I discovered tons of goose bumps on my arms. I raised an eyebrow, not recognizing where I was. I definitely wasn’t in my room because I didn’t see the girls in here with me. I
took a second to look at my settings. The frosty wood cold wood… one fogged window… dead fireflies in a jar hanging above me. I was in the tree house.
Over my body there was at least ten thick blankets on top of me. However, that didn’t seem where the warmth that was going through me was coming from. This warmth that was going through me felt special… something that a blanket, or ten blankets in this case, couldn’t provide.
I turned my head to the right and saw Jonah, his eyes closed and his chest rising and then falling. His strong arms were wrapped around my body and it seemed as if he would never let go.
“Jonah?” I whispered, trying to wake him up so I could find out what in the world was going on. When he didn’t wake up, I tried again. “Jonah?! Jon-”
I was cut off by the feeling of my stomach getting queasy and my knees feeling weak, as if they were made out of Jell-O. I could feel my jaw quiver and I knew what was happening.
I pushed Jonah away from me, forcing myself to get out of his grasp. I then ran towards one the window, opened it up and let everything out of me through my mouth. I was sick. Nausea could confirm that.
I suddenly felt someone grab hold of my hair and pull it back a little bit so it wasn’t in my face. Tears streamed down my cheeks, I detested being sick with a passion. It was definitely one of the worst feelings in the world.
After it felt as if I literally puked my guts out, I wiped my mouth, gagged and turned around to see who was holding my hair back. There was Jonah, slowly tucking a strand of my hair behind my ear.
The taste of vomit wouldn’t leave my mouth, even though I kept rubbing my mouth. Jonah held out something to me and I took it. It was a bottle of mouthwash, which I gratefully took and poured into my mouth. Once the taste of puke was replaced by minty freshness, I spit the wash out the window. I handed the bottle back to Jonah.
“You okay?” He asked me.
“Do I look okay?!” I slid on to the ground and held my head, suddenly feeling it throbbing. I had the worst headache ever. Not even a full bottle of Advil could help me now.
He sat down beside me. “Well, that’s what you get,” He told me.
“Get for what?” I wondered, very confused.
His eyes grew wide. “You mean you don’t remember?”
I shook my head, but that just caused my headache to get even worse. I held on to it again and buried it in my knees, trying to hide from the spinning world.
He wrapped his arm around me and he pulled me on to his lap. I realized that I was freezing cold, so I didn’t decline this. Made sense, I was only wearing the T-shirt Mason gave me and a pair of jeans. I hugged Jonah and laid my head on his shoulder, feeling his warmth on my own body.
“You were gone all night,” Jonah explained. “Literally all night. We all got worried, so Maven, Peyton, Drew, Harlow and McKinley went out into town to look for you. Mason and Jessie were gone to who knows where already. I stayed home though, just in case you came back. And when you did, it was horrible.”
I looked up at him from my knees and signaled for him to go on with a slight nod of my head.
“Your speech was slurred and you couldn’t take a step without falling. You were laughing at everything. You were saying ridiculous things too. Stuff about ducks and whatnot…” He shook his head, realizing that he had gotten off the subject. “Just by looking at you I could tell that you were drunk,” He continued as he looked into my eyes.
