Fall was a thing from the past and winter was officially here. It would now snow every day, meaning that snowball fights had become a daily thing at the apartment building. However, holding onto Jonah as I slept was not. Definitely not.

Ever since that afternoon we had shared together, my thoughts have been so jumbled up about him that I could barely even look at him without feeling completely mystified.

However, that wasn’t my biggest worry at the moment. What everyone was worrying about the most now was Maven’s surprise party that was coming up in just a few hours.

“Do we have the drinks?” McKinley, the ultimate planner, asked me.

  “Check.”

  “Food?”

  “Check.”

  “Presents?”

  “Check.”

  “Music, guests, lights?”

  “Check, check, check.”

McKinley flopped down on the couch and sighed. “This is tiring,” She told me as I flopped down beside her.

“Well, it’s tiring because you’ve spent the last month worrying about this party.” I gave her a slightly encouraging smile afterwards.

“It’s her twentieth birthday Lucy! It’s a pretty big deal!” She replied as she crossed her legs.

“To you it’s as if she just survived cancer,” Mason told her as he strolled into the living room. “Really Mac, you made a little bit too much of a big deal.”

I looked around the room and agreed by nodding my head. There were pictures of Maven hung everywhere, her name on every balloon and even the huge cake that McKinley had ordered had her face on it. Billions of Presents were scattered around the living room. The place didn’t even look the same anymore.

“Look, she’s one of my best friends. If you think I’m going all out for this, you should see what I’m doing for your birthday,” She told me as she poked the tip of my nose.

“You know I won’t be able to top you,” I responded as I slouched on the couch, already worrying about what I would get for McKinley for her birthday, which would be coming around in August.

Just then, the door opened and Peyton walked in, a huge smile on her face. Her boyfriend Zack was standing behind her, holding something in his arms.

“You won’t believe what we found!” Peyton said happily.

She moved away from Zack before we could even reply. Once she moved, Zack revealed a small, skinny beagle with big brown eyes in his hands. The puppy was whimpering, yet still cuddling closely with Zack.

“Aww!” Mason and I squealed as we hopped up from the couch to see the little thing.

His big eyes looked up at us and he was panting a little bit. Zack handed him to me and I held him close. “He’s so light!” I noticed. He couldn’t have been more than eight pounds.
