I took a few steps back and collapsed into a chair on the plane.
This was useless.
I put my head in my hands and lightly rubbed my face out of stress.
This was useless.
It would be a miracle if Jacob and Ethan could do something to help these people. This man has is in check with virtually no way out. There was no helping these people. As much as I wanted to help them, we were all going to die. I could feel my shoulders shaking slightly and felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up to see Jacob standing next to me.
"I don't wanna die," I muttered softly. I didn't know why I ever wished I could come with my brothers or why I let them go in the first place. I should have told mom and dad what the two of them were planning and stopped them as soon as they mentioned this crazy plane.
"I know but we're not going to," Jacob said and a small smile started to grow on his face.
I looked up at him in shock. "You guys came up with a plan?"
Jacob shrugged. "We think we did. Just... Don't worry, okay? Everything will be alright. Ethan and I will fix this."
I nodded. "I really hope you will."
"Same. Now, do you know how long we have until the plane crashes?"
I glanced out the window and frowned. "I'd say about sixty seconds." Jacob nodded then turned toward my other brother. They both looked at the man with the briefcase still near him.
"Sixty seconds. Let's do this," Jacob said to Ethan then jumped toward the man and his briefcase. The man seemed to see the attack coming though so he quickly vaulted out of his seat. He threw himself at Jacob, meeting his attack and forcing him away from the briefcase.
I looked up at where Ethan was standing a moment ago to see that he was gone. I started to wonder where he was but then the man pulled his gun on my brother and I was forced to pay attention to them again. I took a step towards the two but Jacob held a hand up to signal that he had this under control. I bit my lip but stayed out of it. I had a feeling that getting in the way could just make things worse for my brothers.
Some of the people on the plane stopped to watch the fight but none of them, like me, intervened. I just hoped my brothers knew that they are doing.
"You think you're smart or something? Thinking you'd be able to snatch the briefcase from me and save all these people?" The man growled at my brother, his gun still pointed at his head. "I already told you, there's no way to stop this plane from crashing."
"Actually there is one way," Jacob grinned from beneath the guy and gestured to where the briefcase was. I followed his gesture, just as surprised as everyone else when the briefcase wasn't there anymore.
The guy looked over his shoulder then back at Jacob. He was about to say something but then Ethan appeared next to him, with the briefcase and grinned. "Looking for this?" He asked and I was able to see that it had been destroyed. Despite that, it still seemed to be working, as the plane was still falling. The guy, looking irritated, tried to grab at it. The briefcase disappeared from Ethan's hands.
He grinned widely and said, "Oops."
"Wha-" he started to say but I suddenly felt the plane begin to right itself again. I looked out the window to see we were probably two hundred feet above the water. But we were safe, the plane was flying again. We did it. Or rather, my brothers did it. I, once again, was useless.
In the man's confusion, Jacob managed to sock him in the gut, causing him to drop his gun. It only took another kick to the head to knock him unconscious. The man slumped to the ground. Surprisingly, looked a lot less harmless now that he was unconscious. I frowned slightly. It seemed weird to think of this man as just another human. Laying there, he didn't look murderous or evil, just normal. Like any other human being.
Two of the flight attendants on the plane dragged the man to his feet, handcuffed him and took him to the front of the plane for the rest of the flight. I had no doubt in my mind that he would be arrested as soon as we got to Texas.
Everyone else around the plane was staring at Jacob and Ethan in amazement. They smiled bashfully when they realized what they were doing and returned to their seats. I slowly sank into my own, next to my brothers, trying to wrap my head around what had just happened.
The plane suddenly beeped, signaling that there was going to be a message. Everyone around us for quiet. "This is your captain speaking," the voice said. "We apologize for the accident that just took place, but everything is in working order now. The criminal who tried to bring down this plane has been apprehended. When you arrive at your destination in Texas, each person will receive a full refund for this plane trip. Again, we apologize for the incident, and we promise that it will never happen again. Have a nice day." The speaker clicked off.
"Sweet," Ethan spoke. "Now we won't have to pay back mom and dad."
"Yeah, at the expense of almost losing our lives," I muttered.
"Except for the fact that we didn't. Cause Jacob and I save the plane."
"How did you even know that was going to work?" I asked my brothers.
Ethan leaned back. "It was a pure guess. I mean, the briefcase was what was causing the plane to malfunction. So we figured that all we had to do was get rid of the briefcase. Get it as far away from the plane as possible."
"So that entire plan was just a guess?" I asked.
Jacob nodded. "Yup."
"So you only hoped that it would work."
"Pretty much," Ethan shrugged.
"Then why did you do it! You could have killed us had it not worked."
"Well it's not like we weren't going to die anyway," Jacob pointed out.
"And getting the briefcase as far away from the plane as possible was the only thing we could think of that even had a chance of working," Ethan added.
"Yeah, but it was still risky," I said.
"Sometimes risks need to be taken in life, Emily. It's the secret of getting through life. If you don't take any risks, how do you expect to truly live?"
"Like a normal person."
"Oh potato, potato. If you take risks, you are a normal person. Everyone takes risks at some points in their life."
"Maybe, but it still seemed too risky for me."
Ethan grunted, "it was better than just letting the plane fall."
