The rest of the day passed with little happening in the dark, bleak cell which would officially be my last home.
Everyone kind of just broke into little groups of small talk and I sat alone in the corner of the cell. No doubt, Jacob was probably over there trying to come up with a plan to get out and Ethan was probably wishing he could strangle Tara and Quentin. It's how my brothers reacted to most everything.
Me though? I reacted to things by quietly reminiscing over it and wishing I could be better. I myself as a person.
After awhile, Raymond came over and sat next to me with a small groan.
"Not much of a social butterfly, huh?" He asked.
I shook my head. "Not really. Especially when I know I'm going to die tomorrow," I said.
There was a pause and Raymond said, "I'm sorry about that by the way. I can't believe they can just so easily kill you like that. Anyone actually, I guess."
"Well I'm sorry about your family," I said to him. "I imagine that must've been hard." I was lucky. My parents and both my brothers were still alive. So if Quentin and Tara ever did get their hands on them, which I hoped they didn't, I wouldn't be around to watch it. I would be the first gone and I would know that the rest of my family was still alive when I am killed. Raymond, on the other hand, is the last survivor of his family. He had no loved ones left.
"Don't worry about it," he sighed. "I've guessed that was the case for awhile now. Even though I didn't know it was Quentin and Tara who were doing this, I knew that whoever it was didn't seem very friendly."
"Yeah. You can say that again. I never would have thought that I would be killed by my uncle and aunt," I then said and tilted my head slightly. "Strange isn't it?"
"Very," Raymond responded.
"Did either of your parents have siblings?" I asked him. "Not in the electroclan, no, but my mom kind of considered both McKenna and another guy named Ian as her siblings. After Hatch found them, all three if them refused to give into him so Hatch put them all in a cell for who knows how long. Kind of like us I guess," Raymond shrugged.
I looked around the cell for a moment then asked Raymond, "why did you stay out there for so long? Outside of this place?"
Despite the fact that inside the compound, it was actually pretty new and high tech, the outside almost made it look like one of those pueblos in the middle of a desert. It was no cakewalk for someone to live there. Yet Raymond did so for who knows how long.
"Well upon the first month of being here, I discovered there was no way in without being caught. The doors are hightech and they only have two of them, this is the smallest of the Elgen compounds and there were a ton of guards. They weren't easily noticeable but they roam around secretly, always watching. So the only way in was through the vent in the roof. I knew I'd never be able to get to it but I stayed here anyway in hopes that one day someone or something might come along that could get me to the roof," he said. "So I just stayed because of hope I guess. Which, as you can probably see, prevailed." Raymond thought about what he said then scrunched up his face. "Actually, no it didn't but you get what I mean."
I laughed softly. "I do, don't worry."
"Hiding was pretty hard though," Raymond continued.
"Especially with this stupid accent because it's easier to pick someone out of a crowd if they have an accent. It went easier as time went on though. Mostly because I got quieter," Raymond said. I nodded.
"That'd make it easier."
"Yeah. So how did you end up here?"
"Ostin came to our place and told my parents about Elgen so my brothers just had to come to check it out."
"Why didn't they just kidnap you?" Raymond asked. I shrugged.
"Probably because then my parents would've tracked them down with the police. Right now, as far as they know, we ran away," I sighed.
"Right," Raymond said.
There was a large gap of silence between us and Raymond eventually stood and said, "we should get some sleep it's late."
I didn't know why I'd need sleep but apparently it's essential on the day before my death.
