Connor was confused, to say the least. He'd been volunteering at Smiths LGBTQ+ Center -better known as Smiths - for about two months and still hadn't figured him out.
Him, or at least he thought it was a him.
Connor wasn't narrow minded or closed off as much as uneducated on identity, as he had absolutely no idea why this certain boy would refer to himself in third person and why sometimes he'd say 'she' instead of he only to change it the next day.
Connors conclusion? Mentally unstable.
That was, until one of the kids in the center snapped at the poor boy harshly and things became so much clearer to Connor.
"She'd like a orange flavored sucker please." Troye had said when he was asked.
"Who's she?" The person had said back and Troye tilted his head slightly before pointing at himself.
"She." She. She had pointed at herself.
"Oh."
30 minutes later she'd done it again.
"She'd like to go to the restroom, is that okay?"
"Yes that's fine, but please stop talking in third person it's frustrating." Alfie, the guy from before had said and Troye had ducked her head and swiftly walked away.
Then again, only five minutes after.
"Can she pick a show to watch?"
"No, no she can't because the way you talk is improper and confusing. Damnit Troye if you're gonna be nonbinary than at least be clear. Make it noticeable and not just with tricky speech." After his rant Alfie stormed away and Troye left the shelter in defeat.
Connor had watched the whole exchange and felt sorry for the poor girl who did nothing but ask for the remote.
He waited all the next day and when Troye finally showed up, it was with painted hands.
Troyes hands were painted a deep blue all the way up to his wrists and he-she?- didn't even try to cover them.
Troye approached Alfie then and in front of everyone took a deep breathe.
"I'm a boy today Alfie."
"Why are your hands painted?"
"If my hands are blue, I will be called he. If they're pink, her. And violet means I'll be called they. End of discussion." Connor was shocked with Troyes confidence and even though he was sure pink and blue made an ugly brown and not a violet he was to impressed to care.
Now, Connor and Troye had never really talked and that bothered Connor. He wanted to know this boy who could also be a girl or nothing at all. So he made it his business to do so.
