Once Marcus is out of earshot, Tris says, "I'm gonna go take a walk.. You know, get some fresh air." She says it with a smile and starts getting up from the table.
"See you later Tris." I say, and watch her retreating figure leave the cafeteria.
After she's gone and the sites close behind her, I can't help but feel like a part of me is gone. I know I can't protect her and be with her forever, but just because it's not logical doesn't mean I don't want it. I need her so much more than she needs me.
And what about leaving Amity with Marcus? I always expected us to end up leaving Amity sooner or later, but I never imagined that we'd be accompanied by lots of Abnegation and my father. I can't even imagine how uncomfortable I'll be. I know he wouldn't hurt me in their presence, and I know that in my simulation I told him that he was done controlling me, but there are some times, like this one, that I'm seemingly turned into that little Abnegation kid simply waiting for his next beating.
I hate what the thought of that man does to me.
When I escape my thoughts and come back to reality, I realize that I'm one of the only people in the cafeteria. Slightly embarrassed, I get up from the table and go outside, hoping I'll see Tris but knowing that she's probably off having fun by herself or lost in her sorrows, not even thinking about me.
I walk around the Orchard a bit, trying to clear the negative thoughts from my mind. Tris loves me just as much as I love her. I need to stop having these thoughts.
I stroll a little bit longer until it starts to become too hot for my taste. That's when I go back inside and gravitate towards my room, feeling the sudden need to relax.
I haven't had a good night sleep in so long I figure that my body probably doesn't even know what it is anymore.
But it's worth a try.
I quickly strip out of my pants and shirt and then proceed to lay down in my bed.
I don't care what anyone says, I'm getting a good night sleep tonight.

I've slept for perhaps several hours before the sound of my door opening wakes me up.
I open my eyes slowly and see the small silhouette of someone standing in the dim light of my doorway. The person shifts their weight and the light illuminates their face.
It's Tris.
Her eyes are tear-stained and get cheeks are flushed.
"C'mere." I say to her, my words the slightest bit slurred due to my drowsiness. I move over and make room for her to lay down.
She comes over to the bed and I look her up and down. She's only wearing a t-shirt that exposes her legs and goes just past her butt.
But I try not to dwell on that.
She climbs into bed next to me and lays down.
"Bad dream?" I ask.
She nods, her pain evident on her face. She let's a few tears escape her eyes, and it breaks my soul watching her like this and not being able to help her. I move my fingers to her cheek and wipe the tears.
"We're all right, you know. You and me." I tell her. "Okay?"
She nods.
"Nothing else is alright, but we are." I say, brushing my lips against her cheek.
"Tobias..." She says. Something in the way she says it lifts my spirits and makes me feel whole. And then she's kissing me, and everything that's not alright disappears.
I hold her close, my hands exploring the skin on her legs and caressing the length of her spine. She shifts her legs and wraps them around my waist. I pull her closer ad my hands continue to explore the skin under her shirt. I run my fingers over her arms and shoulders, and my hand slightly touches the bandage on her injured shoulder.
She quickly retracts from me and pulls her shirt down to cover any exposed skin, and I can't help but feel a little unwanted, even though I know she feels subconscious right now.
"Sorry." She says quietly, moving to lay down next to me instead of on top of me.
"You don't have to be sorry, especially not for this." I tell her, wrapping my protective arms around her.
"I'm sorry I'm such a mess." She says, her voice cracking as tears escape her eyes. "I'm just so..." She stops talking then and simply sobs into my arms. She's baring do much on her already injured shoulders.
"It's wrong that you have to go through this. You parents are gone, and just because they're in a better place doesn't mean anything. They're not here and that's wrong. It's not alright, and anyone that says otherwise is wrong." I tell her reassuringly. It pains me to see her like this. She's strong, but no one person is supposed to carry this much hurt.
She spends a few more minutes crying, and I wait until she's more or less quieted down to say, "Sleep. I'll fight off the bad dreams for you."
"With what?" She asks.
"My bare hands, obviously." She slightly smiles at that, and I'm thankful that I've made her feel better at least a little bit.
