"Do we have time to run?" I ask her.
The Abnegation have crowded around us, not wanting to miss a single syllable. Caleb speaks. "Why do we need to run? The Amity have it all under control. No conflict allowed."
Now it is Marcus who speaks: "The Amity will have trouble enforcing that. What other way is there than to solve conflict with conflict?" Susan nods, understanding what he's saying.
"But we can't leave. We don't have time. They'll see us." Peter counters.
"Tris has a gun. We can fight our way out." I start moving in the direction of the dormitories but Tris stops me with her next idea.
"Disguises. The Erudite don't know for sure that we're here. We can try and blend in."
"The people who aren't dressed like Amity should go the dormitories then." Marcus says, quickly agreeing with her. "Put your hair down, try and act like them."
At that, the Abnegation wearing grey, Tris, and I start making our way back to the dormitories. Tris shoots me a look that I don't know what to make of before slipping into her room to retrieve the gun and the flash drive.
I follow the Abnegation to a room with various garments lying in piles on the floor. Right away I start rummaging through them searching for something that will cover up tattoos. I come across a yellow shirt with a collar that looks like it'll do the trick and find a pair of light pants to go with it.
I really don't want to change in front of these people, no matter how friendly they may be, so I look around for a room I can go in for a quick second. I spot an open door at the back of the room and go over to it. It's empty.
The second I'm in, I start changing, forgetting to close the door all the way in my haste. I have my shirt up and over my head in less than five seconds and once that's done I practically rip my pants off.
"Do you think the Amity will lie for us?" Tris asks. She's standing in the doorway.
"To avoid conflict? Absolutely." I say, zipping up my pants the rest of the way.
"Nice shirt." She comments, and I can tell she's smirking without even looking at her.
"It's the only thing that covered my tattoos okay?" I say. A look of disgust crossing my features when I look down at my shirt. I glance up quickly and look out the window when I hear the sound of tires on gravel. 5 silver cars are pulling up the Amity's greenhouse, and Erudite guards are climbing out. In addition to them, Dauntless are coming out too, but when I look closer, I see that they have blue strips of fabric wrapped around their upper arms. An alliance... But with Erudite?! The ones that made them slaves?!
What the heck?!
I grab Tris's hand and pull her gently to me. "I didn't think our faction would be that stupid. Did you bring the gun?"
"Yeah, but there's no guarantee I can fire it with any accuracy with my left hand."
"You should work on that."
"I will." She tells me.
I grin. "Just bounce a bit when you walk-" I kiss her forehead. "Act like you're afraid of their guns-" I kiss the tip of her nose. "And act like the shrinking violet you could never be." I finish, kissing the top of her mouth.
"Okay." She says, grabbing my collar and pulling my mouth to hers.
I kiss her like there's no tomorrow, because who knows - maybe there won't be, for us at least.
Just then, a bell chimes three times, summoning the Amity to the dining hall. I wrap my arms around Tris and pull her closer. I want the kiss to be longer but know that we don't have time for that.
I break away from the kiss, take Tris by the hand and go back into the hallway.
In the middle of our trek to the dining hall, Tris leaves my side to put Susan's hair down and whisper something in her ear. She then loops her arm through the other girls' and walk the rest of the way to the hall, stopping to cringe at any armed guards along the way.
The dining hall is packed with Amity, and I assume that almost the entire faction is here.
Although Tris is not with me, I follow her with my eyes and end up sitting across from her at one of the long tables.
We all sit down and wait.
A few minutes after we have arrived, Johanna comes in with several Dauntless traitors trailing behind her. They servey the room but don't seem to locate what they came here for.
Johanna breaks the silence. "Our Erudite and Dauntless friends are searching for some people and request permission to search the parameters. For this to be possible, we may take a vote. Does anyone object to this?" No one raises their hand.
Then the Dauntless traitor woman speaks up. "Very well. Three of you stay here, the rest of you, search the parameters and report back if you find anything." Several of hey guards leave the room. She then stops and begins surveying the room like she was earlier, only this time, she starts walking around and glancing at people.
She stops right behind me.
"Your hair's a little short for Amity." She says to me.
"It's hot." I make a mistake and snap at her. I can practically feel her moving her hand to pull back my collar.
But right before she can touch it, I grab get wrist and yank her forward.
And the firefight begins.
