Marlene: Part One

Not wanting to be there when they grill Lauren for all the details of our seven minutes together, I slip out of the room and choose to go back to my apartment.

Tris isn't there, but I'm not surprised. I heard several of the Dauntless playing paintball on my trek to my room, so that's probably where she is.

I make sure to lock the door behind me before laying down.

But just like always, I'm not allowed to fall asleep because just as in about to close my eyes, a knock sounds at the door.

"Who is it?" I grumble.

"Your father."

It suddenly feels like all of ny breath has been knocked out of me.

Marcus? Here in Dauntless?

How did I miss him?

"May I come in?" He asks, clearly frightened by my not answering.

I mule this over. Should I let him in and try and talk things out with him perhaps?

Yes, yes I should.

After all, I'm not supposed to be afraid of him anymore.

"Sure." I say calmly.

All I hear after that is yanking from the other side of the door.

Oh yeah, I locked it.

I hesitantly get off of my bed and unlock it for him.

The second I see his face, it's like I'm being transported back in time to that little Abnegation house where he beat me.

But he wouldn't do that to me here now would he?

And even if he tried, I doubt that he'd get very far.

I move aside to let him in and he comes, walking very slowly.

I close the door behind us.

"Tobias, I just wanted to let you know that-" He starts.

"What? That you're sorry? I already know that thank you very much." I snap. He's not getting an ounce of forgiveness out of me. Not while he's still sprouting it's every chance he gets.

"Look, I know what I did to you seems unforgivable, but I'm asking you to please, simply try." He pleads.

I rack my fingers through my hair. What do I do?
