As Planned

"Do you have the fugitives?" The woman asks, clearly referring to us.

"Yes, in fact we do." Jack answers.

"And you think that they will come quietly?"

He smirks. "Oh, I have many ways of making them."

And this is what I was afraid of.

It's bad enough that he made us spill our guts to everyone in his Faction, but now he wants to take what we said and use it against us.

I shudder at the endless possibilities of what he's capable of.

"I will be expecting them by tomorrow. And I need them in good condition, otherwise my tests will be invalid. Is that understood?"

Jack nods.

Tomorrow? He's going to deliver us to them tomorrow?!

As if Tris can read my thoughts, she says, "Not if I can help it." And before I have time to register what's going on, she's wiggling from under the bench and shooting in the woman's direction.

"What are your doing?!" I yell quietly. It's not even Jeanine! If she ends up shooting her she'll be killing am innocent woman.

I can't let that happen.

After checking to make sure the bullet missed the woman, I get from under the bench and grab Tris by the arm.

"How come the first time you've been able to touch a gun in months you choose to shoot at innocent people?!" I say, gripping her arm.

"Im giving them a warning. Just so they know that we're not going with them without a fight." She says firmly, yanking her arm out of my grip and putting her finger on the trigger again.

All of a sudden, I hear a scream from somewhere nearby. It sounds feminine.

And that's when I remember Shauna and Lynn.

I quickly take my gun out of my waistband and get up from where I'm crouched behind the bench. I see several Dauntless Traitors darting between alleyways carrying rifles, but they don't seem to notice us.

In fact, they seem to be running away.

But from what?

And then it hits me.

They're retreating, and they're on their way to make sure a certain person gets out safe.

"Jeanine is nearby." I tell Tris calmly. She quickly puts her gun when and starts surveying the area.

"How do you know?"

"Because that's the only way to get a good signal from an ear piece." I don't waste anymore time. I grab Tris's arm and start in the direction I'm which I heard the scream.

"Where are you going? What about Shauna and Lynn?" She asks frantically.

"That's where we're going."

We enter into the shadows silently, searching around for anything that resembles the two sisters.

We've covered half the area by the time I realize we should split up. As much as I don't trust Tris to do the right thing for herself, I can pretty much rely on her when it comes to protecting her friends, so we just have to take that chance.

"Split up." I say quickly, "You go up the road, I'll check within these buildings."

She looks just the slightest bit hesitant before nodding and taking off in the direction of the road.

I quickly scour the area. Most of the buildings are pretty vacant now for whatever reason, but that doesn't mean that they all are.

But when I look around, I realize that the only building left to check is a skyscraper that looks better than most of the other buildings I've checked.

And when I glance around it, there are guards flooding the entrance way, all of them wearing black with blue armbands signifying their betrayal.

Jeanine is in that building, and Shauna and Lynn very well may be too, but nevertheless, when I look up at it, a twinge of fear grips my heart and I take a step back.

Stop being so weak! A voice that sounds exactly like Marcus's tells me. Your friends are in there! You have to go save them despite your fear.

For once in my life, I listen to him.

But right when I'm about to enter the back door of the building, I hear the same scream from last time, but this time it's much closer.

I turn around and enter the alley next to the building and what I find there makes me sick.

Tris and Lynn are crouched over Shauna, who is groaning in agony and gripping her right leg with bloody hands.

Tris must sense my presence, because she looks up at me with a stricken look on her face.

Only one thought crossed my mind.

This day had not gone as planned.
