The woman I yanked bangs her head on the table and falls. But before she can hit the ground, I grab her, take her gun, and use her as my shield. A gun goes off somewhere in the room and I hear sounds of people scurrying under tables.
Pointing my gun at the woman's head, I glance over to where Tris is.
She's still sitting in her chair.
"Tris, a little help here!" I yell over the shouts and gunfire.
She finally comes to her senses and takes her gun out just as I see a guard point his gun at her.
I brace myself for Tris's shot, but it never comes.
Confused, I look back at Tris, who is now standing with her gun pointed at the guard but she doesn't shoot.
Before I can shout at her to shoot, Caleb comes up behind her, grabs her gun from behind, and shoots the guard in the knee.
Just before she can go down, I shoot him in the head.
With my arm still wrapped around the Dauntless woman's throat, I point my gun at the Erudite woman across the room who looks like she is about to say something. "Say one more word and I'll shoot." She closes her mouth.
"Anyone with our group should start running." I say loudly, my voice bouncing off the thin walls of the dining hall. Almost instantly Abnegation start crawling from up under tables and bolting out of the door. Caleb helps Tris off the floor and is about to leave the room when the Erudite woman throws her gun at the last Dauntless guard that is several feet away from her. He instantly pulls the trigger and I turn my head just in time to see Tris tackle Peter, throwing them both out of the way of the bullet.
So she can save Peter but not herself...
Attempting to stop focusing on that, I put my finger on the trigger and point it back at the Erudite woman. "If you move one more time, I'll shoot, and I can bet just about anything that I'm a better shot than you."
She lowers her gun.
Throwing the unconscious Dauntless woman to the side, I follow Tris and Peter out the door.
And then we run.
Outside, the Orchard is crawling with people. Abnegation and Amity all running in every direction possible, some getting shot every few seconds.
The Abnegation are dying, again.
But I can't focus on them now.
A small group of Abnegation and us run in a line with the fence in our sights, but in seconds the cars catch up to us.
"Split up!" Marcus screams.
He didn't have to tell me twice.
I quickly grab Tris's hand and begin taking a different path to the fence. I feel several people following us.
We eventually get to the fence, and when we do, I shoot the lock and slam the door open. Tris, Caleb, and Susan run inside, and lastly me.
I close the door back and look around.
"Where are the other's?" Susan asks.
"Gone." Tris tells her. After making sure there's no one waiting to jump out at us, I walk up to Tris.
"What happened back there?!" I ask her louder than I mean to.
"What?" The way she says it makes her sound innocent and small, not like her normal self.
"You froze! Someone was about to kill you and you just stood there!" My nostrils are flaring and I'm close to yelling at her. "I thought I could as least count on you to save your own life."
"Hey!" Caleb says, coming between us. "Give her a break, alright?"
"No. She doesn't need a break." I stare into her eyes, waiting for her to say something.
"I panicked. It won't happen again." She says, staring back at me.
I raise my eyebrow at her, unsure.
"It won't." She says, more firmly this time.
"OK." I day, turning my attention back to the railroad. "We need to get somewhere safe. They'll regroup and come looking for us."
"You think they care that much about us?" Tris asks.
"Us? Probably not. They would most likely only do that for Marcus, which is most likely dead."
"Tobias... " Tris says, her eyes showing sympathy.
But I don't need sympathy. Marcus was nothing to me.

We start walking again, following the train tracks.
All of a sudden, Tris stops and touches the railroad.
"It's coming." She says.
"But what would we get on the train? Aren't Erudite controlling them?" Cakeb asks.
"No." I say, annoyed. "If they were running them they would have rode them to Amity."
We stand off to the side, waiting for the train to come.
"We have to jump?" Susan asks.
"Unless you want to stay here." I tell her.
Eventually the train comes to us, and the second we see it, we start getting ready for our jump.
I move back from the train, ready my legs, and begin running.
The jump is like second nature.
Once all of us are on board I lean against the wall and so do the rest of us.
Until I see the eyes, that is.
One by one, people start stepping out of the shadows.
I know who these people are with their black shirts and yellow pants and blue scarves.
The factionless.
